Howdy!

I'm going to be going on a solo trip for Labor Day weekend this fall and was wondering if anyone had recommendations on places that would be fun to go alone and play golf for the weekend.

Last year I went to Scottsdale for Memorial Day for hiking and golf and I wanted to do it again, but somewhere else (no thank you to AZ that time of year). Bonus if there's a good hiking trail and breweries nearby.

That's outside of Charlottesville (UVA) , VA nestled along the blue ridge mountains and Appalachian trail. Right in there is the winter green resort with 36 holes of golf. Weather is so mild. 30 min down west is Poplar Grove GC, Sam Snead's last designed course. It's a gem.

Biggest issue I can see is depending on where you're coming from, you may not have a direct flight. There is a direct flight from DFW to Richmond.

If you want to play a out of this world golf course, then https://aubergeresorts.com/primland/experiences/golf/?NCK=8446619966&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA0PuuBhBsEiwAS7fsNYlA8B0k0bTIu0rZJNWUigZ_O1XEw5sbfxrtf8y2iTJ8S3rV3ac6eRoCXbIQAvD_BwE

Probably fly into Charlotte, NC and drive.

Then there is Bend Oregon.

Plenty of hiking trails, wonderful https://www.deschutesbrewery.com/

And pretty amazing golf during Labor Day weekend.

We had an Oregon group with Labor Day Week golf outing in Bandon to Bend that goes back to early 90's. It's still going on but I've not participated the past 5 ears.

Definitely would like to go to Sunriver Resort in Bend someday. With a round at Pronghorn at Tehtherow thrown in.

Would absolutely recommend it. My wife's uncle has a place there and i've been lucky enough to play a few courses around there. They have 4 courses all in Sunriver resort (my personal favorite is the Woodlands course), but close to Bend for any other courses around. Crosswater gets a lot of the publicity as it has held some LPGA qualifiers in the past. They have direct flights to Bend now, so easy enough to get to.

I liked Pronghorn but I agree i prefer other courses around the area besides Pronghorn. Definitely worth doing once if you have the time and budget.

Great time of year for Northern Michigan, and great golf. Crystal Downs and Kingsley are two of my favorites.

yeah i have a buddy who went somewhere in N. Michigan (Traverse City?) the past 2 summers and raves about it, so some of us are going with him this year. He said they are the prettiest courses he's ever seen.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! Thinking it's between Seattle and Portland/Bend at this point

If you do fly into Portland and drive to Bend, (very scenic drive BTW), three courses I would play are:

https://www.losttracks.com/
http://www.crosswater.com/
https://www.aspenlakes.com/

Black Butte is decent. Juniper in Redmon is awesome. Brasada Ranch is great.

I'd stay away from Widgi Creek, Rivers Edge, Eagle Crest.

All Sunriver courses are good.

I played Widgi for the first time last summer during our yearly family Sunriver outing and I thought it was awesome. It was about a third of the cost to play versus crosswater and tetherow.

We used get frost delays out at Widgi during Labor Day week.. It's tight, and has a few funky holes. It's actually a part of our rotation but I thought the OP is only there for a weekend.

I *****ed so loudly for years to get Rivers Edge out of the rotation... Though it's the only course in my life where a young coed was sunbathing top less on the 4th tee box. But that was 24 years ago.

I live in Seattle (Queen Anne). Chambers (45 min from downtown) is really cool and beautiful scenery but a tough walk. Home course is fine but i'd skip for Gold Mountain- Olympic (1 hour from downtown) course on the peninsula. Suncadia in Cle Elum (1:15 from downtown) has some awesome courses that everyone enjoyed. Gamble Sands (2.5-3 hours from downtown) is the best course in the state IMO but a hike from the area. Hope this helps.

If I don't make it out to Bend, any courses closer to Portland worth checking out? Trying to stay within 30-40 minutes of downtown.

I saw Ghost Creek at Pumpkin Ridge

bingo.

Get a cool spot in Bend. Drive to Sunriver and play some surrounding courses.

I imagine staying in Sunriver on labor day may suck. Packed with kids and families.

We went for 7 days in summer of 2019. One of my most favorite trips I've taken. I think I played 6 rounds of golf that week. We went to Crater Lake. Brewery tours/tastings in Bend. Took the lift up on Mt. Bachelor.

Would love to go back but it's a bit of a hike for a texan.

It is definitely a tight track but it was in immaculate shape last July when I played. The trees give it good shade so its not as baked out as say Meadows at Sunriver.

I like Chambers a lot. Suncadia has a few really fun courses including Tumble Creek, which is private but I think not too difficult to get on. The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge and Aldara are my two favorites in that area, though.

Personally not a big fan of Gamble Sands, though I admit it is beautiful.

I really like Widgi. The course forces you to use almost every club in your bag and to think your way around the course. Tiered greens make approach shots a premium. Conditions are normally great.

I completely agree on River's Edge. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Lost tracks has gone downhill. I would avoid it as well, but it has never been my favorite.

OP - Central Oregon can get smokey (dependent on wildfires) in late August, but as long as you look at the smoke map (prevailing winds) you can find a course that is mostly smoke free due to the large number of courses.

For those who mentioned Michigan has anyone done any of the Boyne 10?

Currently there with kids on the mountain. First time in the area and I enjoy the landscape.

Torrey Pines. You'll get on as a single on the South course if you get there by around 5am and put your club in line. There are some cool breweries in San Diego and plenty of nearby hiking. If you do that, I'd also highly recommend playing Coronado.

Big Cedar has to be on the list. Top of the Rock (hosted only 9 hole PGA tournament ever, senior event), Buffalo Ridge, Ozark National and Paynes Valley. All pristine, low traffic and beautiful surroundings. Look them up.

You're welcome!

I second Branson for a golf trip. Table Rock Lake is nearby for some fishing/hiking. A do remember some microbreweries there. Lots of great views from the courses in the area and the golfing traffic is light. From Texas you can drive and save the hassle of losing your golf clubs or baggage in transit, plus save some money for a guided fishing trip. Good luck with your trip and just enjoy your time out in God's Country!
