I'm tasked with putting together a golf trip for 4 guys later this summer. Budget not such an issue but Broadmoor is out of the running (always booked and we want to be at elevation).

We expect to fly into Denver on a Friday morning, play that afternoon, then 36 on Saturday (or half day rafting or fly fishing), 18 Sunday, and fly home (all from DFW). It makes most sense to stay within a 2-3 hour drive of DIA.

I've had a few ideas but wanted to get some input or places unbeknownst to me.

I thought using Breck/Dillon area would be a good home base.

I've heard Red Sky in Vail is nice.

Any thoughts in this area? or others? Anything worthwhile in Grand County? or further out in Eagle counties?

I would do both Keystone courses on Saturday. Those are great courses and usually in good shape. Red Sky is great as well. If the Raven in Silverthorn is in good shape, it is an interesting track. Someone on here has a summer home on the course and says the conditions are greatly improved. I played it in 2020 or 2021 and it was the worst conditioned course I have ever played but the design was great. The Ridge at Castle Pines North is also enjoyable if you want a place to play the day you arrive or leave. Avoid Sonnenalp. I have played it twice and it doesn't do anything for me. Breck is ok but again there are better courses in the area and you have already played it so you can judge for yourself.

Ballyneal is phenomenal but you need a member. Also walking only so not for every group.

I have played Grand Lake many times. The scenery took a hit after the wild fires a few years ago. However, the course is always great. Good layout and never really crowded. The town is also a ton of fun. Great food and bars.

What about TPC Denver or Arrowhead?

Maybe, Red Sky Friday, keystone courses Saturday (I loved the rivers course, especially the back 9), Denver one Sunday AM, then flight.

Agreed on Breck, the only 9 I liked was the Elk one.

Grand Lake is a bit of a hike from that base.

Are there any other courses worth playing within a reasonable distance?

I haven't played TPC. Arrowhead has some tremendous views and the infamous par 3 where you hit between two massive rock outcroppings. The course itself is decent but not as good as others in the area. Not a bad choice overall and you it is memorable because of the visuals. Keystone River is one of the best courses for the money and many haven't heard of it. Ranch is great too but not quite as nice as River.

Great suggestions so far. I'd find an Airbnb in keystone and play 36 there on the Saturday and base the other courses off driving in and driving out. Plenty of good option around keystone and on the way in and out of Denver on the west side of town. Sounds like my kind of golf trip.

It definitely is my kind of golf trip. I love golfing in the mountains. The only chance I have of hitting a 300 yard drive these days and the views can't be beat.

Bear Dance/Arrowhead/Fossil Trace when you get in.

Book a condo or hotel through Vail and play Red Sky Norman or Fazio Saturday and then Beaver Creek/Eagle Vail/Keystone River

Play the other Red Sky course sunday.

Eagle Vail is a muni golf course. I haven't played in a while but they were always great at maintain pace of play and there are some interesting holes with massive elevation drops. Part of the course is played along in the valley. A solid course but I think there are better in the area for the number of days you are playing. .

Yes, in my experience, you have to book a vail property to play Red Sky. You can book the whole thing through them including tee times and I've found its quite reasonable for two top 100 courses. There are a ton of options for lodging from high end hotels to basic 2-3 bedroom condos. You can only play one course each day as they flip flop each day for member play. There's even two clubhouses. A public one and a private one. IMO, they are the best overall courses in the mountains considering conditioning and scenery. They usually start opening all that for booking at the tail end of ski season.

Choosing between Arrowhead and Fossil Trace I'll always say Arrowhead for a group from out of town. It's pricey but as far as scenery it's way up there in the rankings.

Eagle Vail is the public course along the river in Vail and Beaver Creek has a course in the resort you can book with Red Sky. Both are more of a convenience play if you stay in Beaver Creek/Vail/Avon.

River Course at Keystone would be my recommendation to get you those crazy elevation changes you are looking for in a mountain course.

I'm sure you could play on day of arrival and day of departure. In that scenario you'll be playing the same course twice though.

If the plan is to minimize driving then I'd definitely just stay in Kesystone/Breck/Dillon and play both those courses Saturday. In that scenario you could play Fossil Trace on the way down on Sunday.

Raven is an option but I'll wait for JetPilot to show up and fill us in on the past couple years conditions. It was about the worse $180 golf course I've ever played when I last visited.

Also on Saturday remember that you most likely will have a delay in the evening for a storm. Most likely won't get rained out but lighting will be a thing. I'd play River first as Ranch is lower elevation

I can't wait to play Raven with good conditions. JepPilot said they were putting a lot into it. I hope they get it right this year.

Im ambivalent about Colorado golf. I love golf but hate Colorado. It's either too hot and dry or too cold and windy. Ball goes too far and doesn't hold. High altitude gives me a nonstop lethargy and headache. The dry air makes me crusty and my mouth is caked on with cherry flavored chapstick that makes me look like I'm wearing lipstick. And the boogers.... Some major Olympic gold medal winning boogers fill up my nostrils.

Just say no to Colorado golf.

It is where you hit above the equator of the ball. Calling it a ground game sounds a lot better than I topped he crap out of that ball. At least you don't get a big smile on your ball these days.

I should add that if you are class of '89, you should know how to play on greens that are rock hard and never hold a shot if you played on the campus course as a student. I am pretty sure the concrete cart paths held better than the greens. I know the ball didn't bounce as high when it hit the cart paths.

I probably spent more time on the course than classes.. I believe semester athletic pass that included golf was $25. I just don't remember any cart paths because we walked but in the 80s, we did have cheap balata balls I would find along with rock hard Top Flites..

I don't know man... It's all blurry to me now..

It was dirt cheap. Now that you mention it, I don't recall seeing carts in use but who would want to waste the Dixie Chicken budget on a frivolous golf cart.

Ah yes, the alternating course concept. Hm... Maybe we just do Vail valley on Friday, hit the vrbo in keystone/breck friday night. Both Keystone courses saturday, then sunday AM do Breck or Arrowhead around noon and then fly back out.

The keystone ones being right there would be best for a 36 hole turnaround. It'd be a hike to play one in vail, drive to keystone, play, drive back

I'm sure you could play on day of arrival and day of departure. In that scenario you'll be playing the same course twice though.

If the plan is to minimize driving then I'd definitely just stay in Kesystone/Breck/Dillon and play both those courses Saturday. In that scenario you could play Fossil Trace on the way down on Sunday.

Raven is an option but I'll wait for JetPilot to show up and fill us in on the past couple years conditions. It was about the worse $180 golf course I've ever played when I last visited.

Also on Saturday remember that you most likely will have a delay in the evening for a storm. Most likely won't get rained out but lighting will be a thing. I'd play River first as Ranch is lower elevation

IDK. Red Sky is definitely great but I get a feeling that convenience and less driving is valuable to yall. In that case you'll be happy playing the keystone courses for sure. They are great and actually quite different so you get some variety.

My only advice with the plan to drive up to the mountains and play when you get in is the weather. Wouldn't want you to drive all the way to Vail for a 2pm tee time and get rained out.

We were going to do the Vail/Beaver Creek courses but availability and the fact you had to stay on property booted them out. We also didn't want to have to bother with the 1.5 hour track into the mountains.

We chose Golden instead and played Arrowhead and Fossil Trace. Both great courses with plenty of Mountain Views. Golden is a great little town with good restaurants.

Loved the Keystone courses. The views from some of the tee boxes on the River course are incredible.
