I have an opportunity for an approximate 3000 sqft area for a practice green. Curious if anyone has any connections in the biz, referrals, have done a putting/chipping green and what you have experienced with durability, performance, etc.

I have already been in talks with 3 places, but just want to do more due diligence. This project would be for a high school golf team.

Requirements:

  • Putting Green performance - needs to be realistic as possible, somewhere in the 9-13 stimp range
  • Chipping Green performance - I have an area to be able to get shots up to 60yds into this, so again - want this to be as realistic as possible. Also will have fringe/rough areas for more green side chipping
  • Maintenance - I know its not 0, but want to minimize
  • Durability - don't want a product that wrinkles, warps, loses its playability. Thinking 10-15+ yr life span

Other notes: area is not full sun, but more midday sun. There are no buildings around it to worry about reflections. The site has a slight grade to it - about 3-4' over 60' stretch, so we will get to use the natural flow of the ground.

Good buddy has a pretty large chipping and putting green. Putting is of no issue but when chipping and pitching to the green, the bounce of the ball is unrealistic as the green doesn't receive the ball like real turf, rather much higher/harder bounce and roll. I'd think this is where your installer will be worth the money.

And you'd think my buddy should have a killer short game.. He doesn't.

I agree. We built a practice area at our kids school and the one thing I said over and over again was we need it to receive wedge shots. It doesn't. Not very realistic.

Love it for putting though it can skip over the top of the grass a little bit and not quite take the break as much as it should. Hopefully that may improve with wear.

Find out who did The Ronny golf park for PGA Frisco. Best free short game area to practice in DFW on artificial turf imo.

would you mind giving me the vendor name who did your friend's place? email me at my texags user name at hotmail dot com if preferred.

I am hearing of so many different methods of construction, and the conversation changes when I want to discuss chipping/pitching from 50yds...

We'd have pitching contest from the patio over the pool etc.. Bouncing the ball off the fence. Ain't no stopping the ball on the green.
