Does anyone here play on the Golfweek Am Tour? I would love to hear your thoughts. I love competitive golf but I'm wondering if it is worth it. Would love to hear about other Amateur Tours as well if anyone has experience with them. TIA

I used to play the one in the Houston area. I liked it because at that time the tour director made an effort to have the right players in the right flights, and move people up or down so that sand baggers couldn't just prosper at the expense of others. He also added in stableford and other things in the tournament throughout the course of the season.

Unfortunately, I think an issue happened between a few tour directors and the Golfweek Tour national office, that caused some of them to break away and join another upstart national AM tour. I don't recall the name of it but when I find it I'll post.

I get the impression that many of these current and past AM tours were not directly managed by the organizations they were labeled as, but just were marketed as such (Golfwerk, Golf Channel AM Tour, etc.).

Which city are you looking to play in?

This is the other tour I was thinking of. They had live scoring and some other things Golfweek didn't have at the time.

Just finished up my second year of Golfweek. Played in the champ division both times and have had a blast. Everybody out there is there to have a good time so even when your round sucks, it's usually very easy to switch out of competitive mode and just enjoy another weekend round with the guys.

A few notes of critique.

First, the DFW chapter has gotten huge. It's the biggest chapter in the nation, close to 250 members by the end of this year. Each tournament only hase 120 openings so you have pretty mich layout your entire year if you want to guarantee a spot.

Second, follows along with size. All the tournaments are a 730 shotgun on Sundays. Used to be 8 but since the tournaments always fill up, the courses always bump up the start time so that we are all back in for them to use the carts for afternoon public play. This also means that depending on where you live versus where the tournament is, it may mean a 430 or 5 am exit from the house. The chapter extends past the four main counties and are hosted everywhere from Glen Rose to Van Alstyne. This really only matters if you are utrla competitive and are gunning to be yearly points leader or qualify for the national tournament at Hilton Head. The A-D division have so many regulars that if you are not good enough to place in the top 2 at individual tournaments you need to play in at least 75% of the tournaments to get enough overall points.

Third issue would be the Champ division. If you arent planning on playing in this division you can skip this. So talking with the guys the first year i was playing, the winning scores were normally in the E to +6 range. One week a guy could win it at +1 and the next week the same guy shoots 85. Now the Champ division is starting to attract a bunch of college and semi-pro golfers because of the large payouts. The guy who won the season race played on the what used to be the Addams tour 5 years ago and the guy who came in second is currently playing DII golf. Payouts are kept under the cash limit for amateur status so there is no issue which also draws in a bunch of local college golfers. This year i believe +1 was the worst winning score and you see basically the same 5-6 guys at the top of the leaderboard every week.
As long as you go into the tournaments knowing you have no room for error and like playing golf like that you are fine. Personally I like to give myself a little leeway. It started to not be fun knowing that your third bogey of the round pretty much eliminated you from any chance of prize money. A lot of guys that played Champ last year moved down to A flight this year and told me they had a much better time. I will probably make the same move next year.
