Dynamic Duo: All-time great Stacy Lewis & Texas A&M's Gerrod Chadwell
During Friday morning's edition of TexAgs Radio, golf power couple Stacy Lewis and Gerrod Chadwell joined in-studio to talk all things golf. Lewis shared her career path to becoming an LPGA legend, and Chadwell previewed his upcoming campaign leading Texas A&M.
Key notes from Stacy Lewis interview
- Life is busy right now. It's been two years in College Station. It has gone by fast. I went to Arkansas, so I love the small town.
- We do have some time when both of us are down. We have time when we are together a lot. We have a calendar meeting to figure out exactly where we will be. Our daughter travels with me on tour. It's a juggling act.
- We met in Vegas. It's not as cool as it sounds. We were set up by my college golf coach. We were both a little older and at a time in our lives when it worked. I loved him being in college golf. I was glad to be around college athletics again.
- Being a captain for Team USA in the 2024 Solheim Cup Team was not in the cards at all. I'm the youngest by seven years to do this. Anytime I am in the car, I am answering phone calls. We have less than 50 days until Spain. It consumes everything.
- They originally called and asked if I would be interested in being a captain. People ahead of me had other things going on. I said yes. I called Gerrod and my parents because I would need help with our girls. Everybody said yes.
- It's 12 girls on the team. Of course, there is drama. You get to decide everything. Seven make it off a point list, then the next two highest of the world ranking and I get to make three picks.
- I wish my game were better. I am continuing to work on it. At 38, the body doesn't respond like it did at 25. I played well at a team event a couple of weeks ago. I have had sporadic good weeks.
- With the LPGA, I think we are in a good spot. The amount of money we are playing for is crazy compared to 10 years ago. We need more TV coverage. Right now, it's too hard to find.
Key notes from Gerrod Chadwell interview
- I still use GPS to get around town even though I've been here for two years. Our daughter is about to turn five, so once she gets into stuff and we are part of parent groups, maybe we'll get to know Aggieland better.
- People have described our relationship as "passing." It will be seven years later this month, but from the start, we've understood what each other does. If we didn't have that understanding, it wouldn't have worked. Home is where we're together.
- Technology helps grandparents and cousin time. Our daughter loves being around the team. The girls are her "sissy." She loves being around the building.
- Maybe we're a small part of it, but to your diehard fans, Aggies are going to know where the Aggies are playing. We get a good job of getting our schedule out early so local people can come see us, and there are Aggies everywhere.
- We start at Pebble Beach again. Our fall is a by-product of what the ladies have done because everything is an invitation. We'll go to Minneapolis in the middle of September. We'll be at the Stephens Cup in Dallas in October, and that will be on the Golf Channel. We'll finish up at East Lake, which will also be on the Golf Channel.
- We have two new freshmen. Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio is ranked No. 2 in the world right now. You'll hear about Blanca Fernández García-Poggio a lot, and you'll hear about “Cayta” a lot. You'll hear about Zoe Slaughter, Jennie Park and Adela Cernousek a lot as well. We had Lana Calibuso-Kwee step in as well, so I'm excited to get qualifying started.
- You lose a leader like Hailee Cooper, and I'm excited to see who wants to take over that role. There are multiple people that could, so I don't want to force it.
- Giovanna Maymon was a huge part of this turnaround, and now we get to add Austin Ernst.
- With Stacy, I came in on the backend of a really good run. People could say I'm the reason she hasn't won as much. It has been cool to see the back half of her playing career. It's interesting to see her impact the game in other areas, and I think she could run the tour if she wanted to because people respect her opinion. It's amazing to see how she composes herself and how she balances everything. It's interesting to see her manage her time and how successful she has been with it.
- This team will have to earn it. It's a clean slate, and nobody's spot at Pebble Beach is solidified. It's also a long way to May. My girls are comfortable in the desert. I don't want to put expectations on my team because they put the bar high on their own. Would I like to be in the semifinals every year? Yeah, but I'm just excited for the journey with this team. We'll get there soon enough.
