I am thinking about getting back into golf. Have not played in a reeeeally long time. My last set of irons were Callaway Big Berthas from ~2003 iirc

I am thinking of picking up a Taylormade R7 XD set that I have found that is very reasonable. I know they are older tech, but are they still a viable club? Also, what type of red flags should I be on the lookout for with older clubs? Thanks!!

Wrong shafts and old grips are two things to worry about if you are buying used on a budget.

If you are paying someone to regrip the clubs you can easily be in another $100 on top of what you paid -- and if the shafts are really off, you'll struggle (more than you would otherwise).

Kind of Captain Obvious, but I've ignored those things for a "bargain" I regretted.

Check out the classifieds on Golf WRX -- lots of guys who buy & sell. Prices tend to be better than ebay because there is no 10-15% Ebay tax, and sellers tend to pay shipping.

I've seen some good deals on Facebook marketplace as well. People love buying new irons and will let go of their old ones cheap. As trinity said though, check length and shafts as those can be expensive to change.

The 1st question I'd want the answer to
Is what type of player were you when you used to play? That would 100% define what type of club you should be getting.

There have been lots of upgrades in Game Improvement irons and shafts.....

BUT....

A blade is still a blade.

When playing I was shooting in the mid 90s. And have a slice tendency.

Based on that, I'd buy a used game improvement iron. Nothing wrong with playing those sets. Bigger sweet spot, easier to hit. I'm a low handicap and I play a game improvement set. (Stealth Irons)

Get a draw bias driver as well.

My clubs should get to me early next week. Going kinda vintage to get back into the game. Got a complete set of taylormade r7 xd clubs. Came with driver, 3 and 5 woods, 4 hybrid and 5-sw. Picked up a ping zing 2 that is in really good shape. It is the only type of putter I've ever used.

Now just to get the bag and balls and accessories. Excited to get back on the course

Got my clubs yesterday. I am ecstatic about the condition. Granted they are used and you can tell they have been used, but they are well taken care of. They came with Golf Pride Tour Wrap grips that are in fantastic shape. And they feel great in the hand.

Was able to do some research on this set. They debuted in 2009, so they are a few years newer than I originally thought. They are also set up for a draw bias which will help with my slice tendency. Am looking to get out to the practice area this weekend. Don't want my first round back to be Memorial Day weekend.
