Looks like they're going to smaller fields and no cuts for certain designated events (including possibly the Phoenix Open?) don't like this at all.

Much like NIL and transfer rules in college football, these are changes that the current environment made all but inevitable. I don't care for it and think golf will be worse off in the long run for it from a fan perspective, but it is what it is.

This is basically just the WGC which existed for over 20 years. That was 3-4 events with about 70 players and no cut (similar selection in Top 50 + some other ways to qualify). There are technically 14 designated events right now, but 4 are majors, 3 are playoffs, and one is The Players, which won't change. So it's basically taking the WGC-ish format from 3-4 to 6-7 events.

No cut makes Thursday and Friday much less interesting IMO. The smaller fields run the risk of blowouts and just less guys to make moves. I also think the guaranteed (and outsized) paydays for everyone in the elevated events will make turning over the top 50 much harder. That's a couple off the top of my head.

Man...Greg and Phil are destroying the PGAT...

They are very similar. They are also trying to do a format with 3 non-designated events, then 2 designated events, then 3 non-designated, and so on and so on. I believe that the idea is performing well in the 3 non-designated events will get you qualified for the following designated events.

You suckered me in again. I thought you actually wanted to have a respectful and productive conversation so I tried to give a thoughtful answer. I should have known better.

I still don't get what you get out of your schtick. Trying to act too cool for school as a middle aged guy on a golf board with about a dozen regular posters is an odd hobby.

"We have an exciting, novel concept that we are going to introduce into professional tournament golf for the first time: teams! Also, we will be introducing the players on the first tee to walk-up music. All tournament rounds will be shotgun starts, which I assure you, has never been done in professional golf!" - Jay Monahan, probably

Nothing about PGAT vs LIV conversation is productive.

Either hate LIV or couldn't careless.

I couldn't careless.

Sorry you feel like you got suckered in. That wasn't my intention.

But some here will take every chance to take a shot at LIV.

I don't know why anyone should feel passionate about any of this.

It's quite amusing.

The changes are good for the PGA Tour. Greg and Phil got greedy and arrogant. Now the PGA Tour is on the upswing while LIV golf has problems and it can't solve some of those issues such as scheduling due to the majors and big events on the PGA Tour that LIV golf can't compete against head on.

So LIV was good for the PGAT despite what everyone said.

Old rory even said today LIV exposed many of PGAs flaws and they're being reactive to make the tour better thanks to LIV
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

I don't know that I would call it passion, but golf and college football are my two favorite sports to watch. So when things happen in either that I think are not good for them long term, TexAgs seems like a perfectly reasonable place to discuss them.

If you have no interest in following professional golf, why do you post on it? I mean, I have no interest in tennis or soccer and coincidentally enough, you won't find me posting about either. You particularly won't find me going to their boards just to say "I don't know why any of y'all care about this. I couldn't care less. It's really amusing that you do." Again, just a weird thing to do.

They'll also be OWGR points up for grab. Jay and his buddies are just hypocrites.

I'm fine with the no-cut events, but they shouldn't get OWGR points.

LIV forced the PGA Tour to accelerate some improvements but to say that LIV golf, the Saudis, Greg, Phil, etc were doing things for the game of golf to make it better isn't all true either given the political, cultural and financial aspects surrounding LIV golf and their real motives.

Cool. Then neither is anyone at the GPAT. You can't have it both ways. No matter what they say out of both sides of their mouths.

IDGAF about any of that.

I'm just laughing at the hypocrisy of the PGA when the big argument from guys like Rory and I think even Tiger are 'Oh that's not competitive golf. If there's no cut what's the point of competing'.

Now here they are copying everything LIV has done.

If this kinda stuff was in the works and talked about maybe these guys should've bit their tongue and held off on that particular criticism.

The one constant and divisive figure in all of this golf politics and money fight over the past 3 decades has been Greg Norman. He has some good ideas but the way he wanted things done and his brash attitude caused a lot of issues and bridges burned so he bears a lot of blame in this as well.

Then LIV golf should have put a better product on the golf course but they can't because they suck.

Not that simple. They could put out the best product on the course but if they're blackballed by major media the result will stay the same.

That's one of the unfortunate things about sports. In a lot of cases the media picks winners and losers instead of the fans.

Especially when they're bought to do so.

LIV golf and the Saudis should have known all of this before they launched their tour so zero sympathy to them. Everyone knows the corrupt activities behind LIV golf and its partners and having Norman as their front man is not helping them.

I'm not pro LIV. I'm just not anti LIV.

I don't think there is a pro LIV person on the board. There are people open to LIV and interested in what the product will be, and there are very Anti-LIV people. I don't see much else.

I enjoy that it's actually trying be fun. That they at least pretend to care about the caddies, support staff, and families. That even if a high profile golfer is off the leaderboard, it still matters for the team. That kids can actually go and enjoy themselves and don't have to be quiet. That everyone is playing at the same time in the same conditions and the leader was not just a benefactor of a tee time. And no leader can hit an iron down the last hole to protect a lead because everyone else is in the clubhouse. I actually am excited about the team aspect if they can get it like F1 with product sponsors.

The biggest thing I like is they're attempting to put a product out that can appeal to an average person because it's fun instead of just the sweater wearing club members. It would do much more for the sport.

That's where I'm at. I'm of the belief that a little business competition is healthy. The PGA threw a huge fit over LIV. It was also kind of annoying how some of the players like Rory ran with a holier than thou schtick over the whole thing.

At the end of the day the PGA isn't going anywhere and LIV will either sink or swim(most likely sink). The PGA is making changes that they think will improve their product which is good.
