I currently live in Helotes, but am looking at joining Fair Oaks Ranch for golf. We would utilize it for other things some as well, but until we move over that way it would be mainly golf.

I was wondering if anyone here is a member or has any feedback on being a member there.

Thanks!

Sure. What would you like to know?

Its a large, relatively casual, family friendly club. A lot of members. Active MGA, among other things. Food options and service continue to get better. I think full golf is a bit expensive, but I haven't shopped other clubs so maybe I'm just being an old man here. I don't get to play nearly enough to justify the expense so we're typically Social or Tennis members. Both golf courses are great; one is tight and one is more wide open. They've poured a lot of money into redesign and upkeep and have done a good job.

Thanks!

The classic golf membership, which is everyday but Saturday, doesn't seem too badly priced. While I don't get to play a ton of Saturdays, I think I would get annoyed not being able to play when the occasion does come open.

How difficult are the courses? If you had to compare them to another course around San Antonio as far as difficulty?

Difficulty, I would call them a 6 or 7 out of 10.

They feel like Austin golf courses, not San Antonio.

Harder than Dominion. Live Oak is tough track from the tips. Black Jack is a little easier because of the space. I'd call them 8/10 & 7/10.

Am a current member - Blackjack just had greens & tees redone. Blackjack bunkers are next to be redone. Classic golf is no golf on Fridays after noon to Sundays after noon. $530/month. Full golf is $705 a month. No clue to the initiation charges. Seems like there are cart plans too.
Both courses have some elevation changes, both are walkable. The membership seems to prefer Live Oak. Maybe less windswept? Both are set back off I-10, unlike the Dominion so no I-10 noise. Tennis & pickleball courts are in decent shape. The demographics of the club have gotten younger in the past five years. MGA & LGA are very active. The Ladies have something every Wednesday, men once a month on Saturday. With 36 holes it is rare not to get on one of the two.

Chow hall is ok, as far as private clubs go it is a decent bang for you buck. But know it is still $7.00 for a Shiner Bock. I have no idea if they give anything for referrals and I'd guess not. But if they do & you want to join you can have whatever they give me. Sig at gmail to get in touch.

What does the initiation look like?

believe it's somewhere around $7500. I can get an exact if you want without you having to work through the staff.

It is a very active club which I enjoy - lots of people using the facilities, etc. I don't always like it when clubs are ghost towns.

Thanks. That's helpful to just have a general ballpark. Wasn't sure if it was a ~$10k or $25k+ situation. We're hopefully going to be moving back to Texas in the next 12 months and the Fair Oaks Ranch to Boerne area is where we'd like to be.

On my next trip down I may try to twist your arm to bring a guest out to see the course

Would gladly show you around. Wife and I grew up in the area, moved away to do a career in the military and settled back here. Super happy with the decision and love the community.
