Snagged my third hole in one on Easter Sunday.

Handicap is 1.0 trending to a .5 after yesterday's 68(-4).

Played the round above with some friends and even though there were chances left out there to shoot a best of 66 I was proud I finished the entire round w/o a blemish on the scorecard for the first time! One of my playing partners wanted to give me my four footer on 18 w/o knowing what was on the line but I putted everything out. Pumped my fist for a par and then explained.

Not even close to winning an MGA event or having irons as a strength. Need to probably see about that other goal of getting lessons.

Start playing again. I had one REALLY bad day in college (2013) and hadn't picked up the clubs since.

Recently, a buddy invited me to play a round, and while I was terrible, I hit a few really nice shots that brought back the itch.

Due to a serious abdominal surgery in the fall I was sidelined for about 6-7 months without golf until about 8 weeks ago. The first couple of rounds back were understandably rough, but I've been playing the best golf of my life since then.

I'm down to an 11.5, but I'd love to get into single digits and keep it there. I think I'm close.

Also, a goal was to start playing more high quality courses. With all that downtime I had lots of time to think about what I'd missed out on. So a couple weeks ago I went and played Bethpage Black, going to Pinehurst in a couple weeks, next year we're going to Sand Valley, and I'm sure I'll slip in a few highly rated courses in between.

Shoot under par for 18. Have done it for 9, just not the whole round. Also trying to increase swing speed without killing myself.

Completely forgot about this post. Came close last week with the 72. Been using the Stack trainer and have seen some modest increases in speed.

On the stack trainer....

Still feel like your tempo is good?

Yeah I haven't had an issue with it. I've only gained around 3-4 mph. I'm going to start a new program this weekend with it so I'll see how it goes.

My three goals are to break 80 for the first time, birdie 18 different holes at my home course (we have 36), and get down from a 13.7 index at the start of the year to a 9.9 by the end of August when I go play Kapalua. I was a 10.7 last October.

Shot an 83 today with two doubles and a triple while also missing two birdie putts inside 8 feet. My ball striking has never been better than it is right now and my putting has never been worse.

After today I have one goal checked off the list. Been playing great the last month or so and after today's 82 I'm down to a 9.7 index. Already have 15 different holes birdied this year so feeling good about that goal as well.

Still waiting on that 79, but after a few 82s I'm feeling good it will happen at some point.

Post a personal best of 66 or lower at home course (elsewhere welcome as well)
Almost completed this today. Shot 67 at pebble. Bogey on 16 killed it, tried to play it conservative, which I think was still the play, but I just didn't execute a good tee shot or put my chip close enough. Still almost had it, left the birdie on 18 about 2-3 revolutions short.

Also, if I didn't bogey 16, it would have been my 2nd round w/o a blemish. My first coming only 2 weeks ago (I think).

Got another one down with 19 different holes birdied this year. Actually eagled a par 5 for the 19th. With one of our courses closed I'm going to pivot and try to birdie all 18 on the open course. 11 of those down with 7 to go.

Now I'm starting to get frustrated I can't break 80

I'm in the middle of overhauling my swing. Been working with a coach steadily since October. Practicing 6-7 days a week right now on a Trackman (found a great place while I'm in Austin for the holidays). I want to break 80 for the first time and def my hcp down from 12-13 well into the single digits. I generally don't get to play many rounds in the course of a year, so these goals may be achievable just by getting out on the course more.

I'm back in Austin for the summer, and have shot 79 twice out at Legends on LBJ from the blue tees. So, goal #1 achieved!!

I've also got my handicap below 10, to a 9.9, to be precise. That goal is 1/2 accomplished, as I need to get it "well into the single digits", not just below 10.

Tickled pink, regardless. :-)

Keep playing and working on weak spots, and you'll get there. Sounds like you and I are very similar in our skill levels…

Just played Legends again this morning. Had my best round ever going until carding a quadruple on #16, but still shot my second-best score ever at 80. This dropped my handicap from 9.9 to 9.1. I think I need to define "well into the single digits - how about, oh, 8? I think that's just achievable before my golf season ends in a few weeks, if I can keep playing as I have been the last 3-4 weeks.

  • play 50 rounds of golf
  • beat personal best of +4 for the round
  • try one new course that I have not played in Houston area

I'm at 22 rounds. 50 is going to be tough.

beat my personal best twice this year. Shot -1, breaking par for the first time. then shot -1 again a month later on a different course!!

still have not played a new course in the houston area. will try to get that done.

I thought my goal was to get to single digit handicap. But I think my real goal is to shoot less rounds in the 90s. Be more consistent.

My home course is just so tight that penalty strokes add up on off days. If I played the courses in LC on a regular basis I'd likely have a 9 hcp with the game I have now. Instead of this 12.6 currently.

well, I played UT Golf Club yesterday, in 106 deg heat and windy conditions and shot 74, so now I am 8 and 9 (par or better vs over par) towards my 2023 goal.

I'm not sure this made the day better or worse but I was afforded the Brandel Chamblee cart for the day.

It is an extremely nice facility with a super nice conditioned golf course. The practice areas are incredible, ProV1 range balls, etc.

I'm there for golf and to meet someone who will be on my team this year, so I just have to ignore all the burnt orange for a few hours.

I shot and 80 and an 83 the last two weekends, bringing me down to 8.9. I can almost say my second goal - getting my handicap "well into the single digits" - has been accomplished. If I can play at my current level 2-3 more times, I will be in the low 7s, as soon as I purge the higher few scores out of my low 8 of my last 20.

Played competitive golf most of my life. Walked away from the game about 10 years ago, haven't practiced and played maybe 20+/- times since. Have a co-worker who is scratch/+ and obsessed. He wants me to play US Four-ball and some other regional tournaments with him. He convinced me to reestablish my amateur status, which I have done.

My goal is to get out there and play a few tournaments without the pressure I once carried and see what happens. Mentally, it will be tough to be mediocre compared to the player I used to be, but I guess I get to learn to stretch that muscle this time around.

+ hcp is a stretch goal for the year.

First competitive tournament today in 10 years. 74 t-3, to qualify for Dallas Am at Trinity Forest.

12 rounds in for the year and down to 0.4. Getting some feel back. Good to grease the tires today.

Cedar Crest greens are absolutely gone again, btw.

Qualified for Texas Mid-Am in Midland. Fired -2 under 70. Couple of tops off the tee haha. 2 for 2 on qualifiers so far.

Couldn't play Dallas am because had a new kiddo enter the world the same weekend.

Finding some feel. Think I've practiced about 4 times. Hcp should be + after they post the score. Will grind it out this month to prepare.

My last two rounds of my annual Texas golf season came in at a personal-best 78 and an 82. My handicap is now 7.6. So I have accomplished my two goals for the year, both breaking 80 (3 times!) and getting my handicap well into the single digits.

I am headed back 'over there' in a couple of days, and perhaps I'll get to play a couple of times more before the weather closes the season, but for all practical purposes my 2023 golf season is in the books.

Goals for the next season are to improve my putting (easily my weakest link), but I don't know where I will practice all winter. Same thing on sand play. My pitching game still has some serious glitches in it. I have improved my technique significantly, but under my old spastic swing comes out and I chunk it. More block practice with some simulated pressure (5 in a row, 10 in a row, etc.) might be all that I need on that.

If you are able to attain and retain a plus handicap while having a new kid in the house...kudos to you. I pretty much quit golf for 10 years after my daughter was born, only to catch the bug again when I played with my new boss in London back in 2010.

Very nicely done. Keep us in the loop on your tournament results. It is motivating...

I played a round or two a year for 30 years but never practiced and never took a lesson. Decided if my dream of golfing in retirement was going to be fulfilling, I needed to get busy and get better. Joined a club, and started taking lessons at Golftec.

Because of the heat I've been playing nine holes only for the most part. Broke 50 in my last nine which was a major deal for me. Parred first two holes and should have parred four of the first five but three putts killed me.

I could never hit my irons before taking lessons and could only hit my driver and hybrids. Now I'm the opposite, hitting irons relatively well (but shorter than ideal - but I do have an idea of why I hit them high and short). Driver is a mess, although in the last round I hit 6 of 7 drives well. Might have found something...we will see.

Having a club to go hit balls has been huge. Actually went out in 108 degree heat yesterday and hit for 30 minutes (we have a shaded end of the range), had a cool drink in the club house then putted for another 30 minutes. Something I've never been able to do before is practice. When I play for a club I will use it!

Goal is to be a bogie golfer at some point. Driver and putting are two areas I can see that could take off strokes very quickly.

Track stats (I'm terrible at this) and improve putting to maintain + handicap all year.
Currently +1.2 and I'd like to see a 2023 low handicap of +2.2 or better.
Put up a new low round of 65 or better.

Briefly dipped out of + territory earlier in the year, but I'm solidly back in.
Hit +2.2.
Put up 2 65's within a month of each other in May/June.
Bonus: won club championship this weekend

1) Maintain scratch (currently 1.2) - Once my team's season is over I'll have 2 months before I take 3.5 weeks.

Win an MGA event (1st time joining at my course. Been keeping a handicap around 2 years now if I remember correctly and a member for 6 years).
1.) I've been hovering in the +.3 - +.8 range for the past 2 months or so. And really like some of the swing tweaks I've latched onto.

2.) Played in a member-guest this Friday-Sunday at Augusta Pines as a guest. I played the course once before Friday. This was my first member-guest experience ever and it was such a phenomenal experience!

Friday was a practice round best ball which they used to qualify for their "Stampede"(I've heard it called Horse Race as well - a 10 team elimination side game) after Saturday's round is complete. We shot 3 under gross, which wasn't spectacular but got us in the Stampede. I was nails on the the first hole with my approach being the closest out of everyone playing from the furthest tees (older guys played from their respective markers). 2nd hole we squeaked through. 3rd hole everyone made pars and I wasn't able to get past the putt off, but enjoyed that extra experience.

Saturday was unreal! Scramble format and my partner and I lit the front nine up! Birdied the first 3, (On hole 2 I hit the back of the cup on the chip which nearly dropped in for eagle). We were 6 under after 8! My partner setup and missed all the putts for birdie (most of the time not by much) so due to his reads I drained 'em all! Only a couple were easy, while 3 of them came from big distance. We bogeyed 9, which was our only bogey all week (I halfway shanked the tee shot). Putters went cold for a bit after missing a back of the cup putt pop out on 10 from somewhere around 40-50 feet. Found 3 more birdies to wrap up Saturday at -8(64)I made those birdie putts too! 1 Behind the lead after Saturday, putting us in the "final pairing" for Sunday.

Sunday I stunk until I found the missing swing feel on 8. I made a couple pars, but my partner kept us in it when I wasn't playing the A player part. On 9 I had a stupid putt that I had to hit perpendicular to the hole from 20 feet, if it would have been a straight putt. I hit it uphill 15-20 feet and watched as it then fell down the slope. As much as I feel like I studied it well, it was such a hit-and-hope putt. It magically dropped in giving us our only birdie on the front, along with our 8 pars. We continued to ham and egg it. Made our 2nd birdie on 14. Then on 18 I had a putt for eagle and narrowly made it, leaving a small tester for birdie, which I converted. Not knowing at the time that it would put us in a 3-way tie for 1st gross in the 1st flight! Off to the playoff we went after a 45 minute waiting game. We all parred out on 1. I piped a clutch drive on the 2nd playoff hole after my partner went OB. My adrenaline was going, not nervous, but rather excited to be in that position. Unfortunately I hooked it into the creek while the the teaching pro(non-member, which I was glad to play against as it gave me a thermometer to measure myself against) got on in 2 and cozied his eagle putt to 2 inches to win it. We also came in 3rd net along with the tied for 1st Calcutta share.

There were some what-ifs, I'm sure for the other players as well. I never felt really nervous which was awesome and had such an amazing time. I'm sure that has to do with playing so well and making some money/gifts/clubhouse credit. However, I feel like a lot of it had to do with my partner as well as the experience in general. I know not everyone gets this type of experience, especially on their first time out, but it was one of the best golf experiences I've had! I know I set the bar high, possibly too high, but looking forward to next year's member guest!
