What to expect out of a "full bag" fitting?

I booked myself for a full bag fitting. I'm hoping that I can get the irons I bought off the rack tuned to my swing (Taylormade Stealth irons purchased with airline miles, ha), potentially get fitted and buy a new wedge, and start looking at what a new driver might cost me down the road.

I'm curious as to what I should expect from people that have done this before. Any tips? I realize that there is only so much that can be done with cast clubs compared to forged when it comes to adjustment, but I am fully expecting to need new shafts. What I really, really don't want is to walk out of there with zero confidence in my irons and wanting a new complete set, so I'm steeling my nerve a bit to what I imagine is a guaranteed sales pitch.

About my game:
  • Played extremely casually since high school and recently decided to get more serious about improving
  • Typical score is anywhere between 92-95
  • I usually hit the ball fairly well with the odd fat iron shot waiting on me somewhere in the round
  • My biggest strength is my driver
  • I feel like I lose a lot of strokes from 150 and in
  • Worst part of my game is getting it close to the pin on the approach and usually leaving myself too far (and right into 3-putt territory)
  • never had a fitting or a lesson, but starting lessons after Christmas
  • My goal is to consistently be breaking 90 by this time next year

i'd ask if they will split the fitting into two sessions. those swings are going to add up.

Lots of swings!! You will get tired doing the whole bag at once. Agree split it up into a few sessions.

It will be less swings if he is keeping the iron heads

You can expect to pay alot of money….

Personally I'd divide it up. Gives you and the fitter alot more focus as well as mitigates too much change if specs are different.

But no one loves or hoards more new clubs than I do….

I believe we're already splitting it up into two sessions, which I thought was a good sign. He told me it was 3-4 hours total, including driver, fairway/hybrids, irons, wedges, and putter.

Your bullet points are similar to mine. I've gone back and forth on whether to do a full bag fitting, but I've recently been getting back on the course and hitting my irons better than before. I had a putter fitting 2 years ago and have confidence in my wedges, so I'm more likely to do a fitting at the top of the bag in the future.

I'll be the annoying guy in the thread.

You should ditch the fitting and do lessons first. If you take your lessons seriously, your clubs might not be right for you in a couple months anyways.

He's right you know.

other than finding the right lie angle for your set and the right shaft for your driver and the rest of your set, fitting is overrated imo.

Also, your swing in the morning is different than evening and on Monday vs Saturday. And your swing on the indoor simulator is different than on the range and definitely different than on the first hole at 7 AM on Sunday morning.

Hmmm ...interesting phenomenon...

Did you just learn to chip it closer or just putt with your wedges??

In a typical round of golf, you may make 30-50 full swings. Typical driving range session, you may make 50-200 full swings. So for a 3-4 hour fitting session, your 150th swing may not be a good representation of your real swing on the course.

Coda to my OP:

Session 1 was today. Here's what I learned.

(1) I definitely need lessons. Luckily, I was consistent enough in my iron striking to get fitted, and my swing was actually better than I anticipated. Lots to fix for sure.

(2) I'm not an off the shelf fit. The shafts I was using were KBS Max MT Stiff at standard length and 85g. The ones that were best for my swing were Project X LS 6.0 at 120g, +1/2". It was crazy how much more upright I was able to stand, and I could feel a lot less strain on my lower back. Picked up like 5-8 MPH with these while feeling like I was swinging easier. I could definitely "feel" the extra 35g, but it just swung better for me. Great dispersion, too. I ended up needing thicker grips as well.

(3) I picked out a a new head and decided to build a set from scratch, and I put the driver on the back burner for a while. I know. I KNOW! It's even in my OP. I was stealing my nerves all or morning, but damnit. was just hitting the P790s that much better. The fitting comes with lifetime loft and lie adjustment, so as I learn more and my swing changes a bit, I'm covered if things need to be adjusted, which is nice. Plus, these are forged so there will be more options for me in the future.

(4) I'm beat. Y'all weren't kidding. We spent a lot of time tuning the irons, and I hit what felt like a thousand shots over a ton of various combinations. We were already planning to split the fitting into two 2-hour sessions, but I was pretty well whipped. I hit a handful of drivers, but I was just running on fumes. Instead of stressing it, we tabled the driver and I'll come back next year for session two. We ended up spending the last 30 mins or so with him giving me an impromptu swing lesson and some practice notes, which I appreciated.

So where am I with all this? I probably should have done the lessons first, but I'm glad to have my head around the equipment. I'm also glad that I'll have a set of irons that can change with me as I improve.

I definitely should have upped my practice before hand, if for no other reason than to increase my stamina. I'm usually a 40-ball bucket guy when I go to the range, so hitting 100 full swings in fairly quick succession was hard.

I'm excited for the new clubs though. It's good to know I have what I need, and now it's all about learning new movements and creating new muscle memory. Old baseball habits die hard, but now I'm committed to the process.

Awesome!

Glad you found the right lie, grip and shaft. To me, that's the essence of club fitting. And if you indeed found the right lie, grip and right shaft (weight, length, stiffness), now you can build from there. Right clubhead after this really is a secondary importance to good golf unless you're going to blades or super game improvement shovels.

I also think it's super important that the longer shaft is giving you a better stance. This will hopefully improve your swing and you can swing freer with better balance and tempo.

Well done man!

No no no. Be a man, spend thousands of dollars on equipment first like I did.

Ok so I'll be that other guy…what did this fitting cost? What did the original new set or irons cost, what's the plan for those now that you got another new set and what was the final cost on those with the new shafts?

Update:

I took a year to take lessons between session 1 and 2. Got fitted today for driver, hybrid, and wedges.

I have a Titlest TSR2 coming my way with a LA Golf DJ 65 shaft, and Ping G430 4 hybrid with a KBS Tour Prototype 85S+ shaft, and two new Cleveland CBX wedges.

I already had a solid Ping G425 LST 3 wood in the bag that didn't need any modifications.

Big fan of the experience. If I learned anything, it's that lessons should precede a fitting. Also, this is expensive. That being said, I'm glad to have a bag set up I can use and grow with for the next decade.

Ha! It's a two man shop and he's the owner, but yeah, it was overly expensive. I know I could've had it built to length online, but I did like the shaft (before getting the shaft).

HA! I wish. I started taking lessons soon after these clubs came in and it was basically a rebuild from the ground up. Collapsing at the top, coming over the top and outside in, all the standard mistake you see the rookies make. Finally on the other side of the rebuild and now it's just practice and more practice.

absolutely love them, but I think it might be the shafts as much as the heads. They are markedly heavier than anything I've gotten off the rack and I can swing them easier but get them moving faster. Great clubs for sure
