We're looking into diving into the deep end and starting from the beginning. Any tips or recommendations for a first set of clubs for a beginner man and beginner woman? Any thoughts on either of these sets?

I would be looking for clubs that are two or three generations old. Used would be even better. Those sets often suck for the price.

Hell, we can probably crowd source two good sets from this board that would be better.

Certainly open to used, but don't even know really where to start.

I agree, buy good used gear rather than new stuff that sucks and is hard to hit. All the major manufacturers game improvement gear from 3 years or so ago will fit your needs.

As stated, 'game improvement' will be a key search term. These should have more forgiveness in them, so you still get something positive from shots that you don't hit right in the middle of the club face.

Don't trip out about a driver at this point. Same info as the irons. Try to find a good name brand that is a little older. You don't know what you like, so don't spend a fortune yet. Save the money and get lessons and go to the range. A lot.

Don't buy either one of those box sets.

You're better off getting a pre-owned set of Game Improvement categorized irons from any major OEM...along with a 3-5 year old Driver and FW woods.

If I had to point you somewhere I'd point you to PING G series...going all the way back to G15s to present.
Agree on the G series irons. They are damn near indestructible.

For the OP I would look for the following:

Driver: Something high loft with a regular flex shaft. Callaway, Ping, and Taylormade would be where I would start.

Wood: I would go 5 wood, but three works here as well. Same advice as above for the brands.

Hybrid: I would look for at least a 4 and maybe a 5 hybrid. So much easier to hit than long irons

irons: Any major OEM SGI or GI iron works here. I am partial to ping g series. look for something 5-AW, SW, LW

Wedges: I would skip specialty wedges. Although wouldn't be opposed to a single cavity backed 56 like the cleveland CBX or mack daddy CB

Putter: Go to the golf store and see what fits you eye. I would lean mallet.

Be careful with ebay as there are a lot of fakes floating around. Depending on where you live there are great places to look for used clubs. Callaway pre-owned is my go-to for good deals online.

That's not bad. I would not buy the 58 degree wedge.

You can also use this site to get a general market idea for clubs: https://valueguide.pga.com/

Here are the irons he is selling: https://valueguide.pga.com/library/249/cleveland/iron-set/cg4/

Oh hell...

We all know you should get fitted with the latest foam filled hollow bodied tungsten weighted center of gravity adjusted modified forged cast oil dipped alloy steel iron set with the stiffest upgraded aftermarket shafts... Don't forget to get a few $400 Scotty Cameron putters and a matching set of Titleist Vokey wedges. But do not get iron covers, iron cleaning brush, ball retriever and colored tees.

Then in 6 months, upgrade your clubs because manufacturers continue to come up with innovative design features to take more of your money!!!

And continue to constantly tinker with equipment.

I followed through on my promise to get some iron cover covers. They look awesome and my iron covers will stay looking like new. Takes me less than 2-3 minutes to pull out an iron.

Wanna play some time?

Seems pricey but perhaps not? The website linked above says resale range from 770.00 - $1,041.00. But unclear to me if that price includes a 4 iron?

I found some great deals on 3balls.com

They will rate their clubs from Fair-Good-Great and they are priced based on that rating.

My last set of irons I ordered were Titleist AP1's that are a few generations behind not bank breaking.

They got regripped for an additional $6 a club and it took a week for delivery.

I purchased my driver from PXG Gen5 half off. Keep an eye on their website as they run sales regularly.

Shall 02,

The advertised set doesn't have a 4 iron and you may not even need it. If I was going to buy a new set of irons, I would probably buy that Ping G425 model. And everyone here knows I'm a firm believer in many irons from 20 years ago are just as good.

But the advertised set is a green dot which means they're 2 degrees upright. They're set up for someone with a higher hand position at set up... Typically taller or have short arms. Also, the shaft is regular flex. If you're a class of 02...and in early 30s, your swing speed and tempo may work better with stiffer shaft flex.

Previous recommendation of buying previous generation iron set makes sense. The G425 is pings current model. They're good but not sure if it's much better than G410.. G15.. Etc.

*****. I love G5 irons.. Forgiving, buttery smooth and hits the ball high and much cheaper.

But if you're going to buy a set of ping irons, I recommend you do some measuring of your hand position for the correct lie color.

But, if you were to buy that set and later find out your lie angle needs to be different, ping will change the lie angle and repaint the dot for you for free as long as you pay the s/h as that set is still within the warranty period. One day, my entire bag will be Ping.

Thanks all. As it happens, i probably do fall in the green dot range on ping's chart (short arms).

I may have a set of like new ping g400s I can part with for a lot less than those 425s.

I will post back here shortly (my dad has this set he bought when DicksSports was getting rid of them......not sure he plans on using them over his other pings.)

EDIT: My dad has a set of Ping g400 black dots he will sale. Anyone who is interested.
4-PW, stock steel shafts in regular flex, stock length.
He used em 3 rounds.
$400 shipped from north Tampa Bay area.

Try to get your wife interested in quilting instead of golf. Those high dollar long arm quitting sewing machines are way way cheaper than the average divorce.
I feel so much better since about 11 a.m. CT on 20 Jan. 2025
