For most of its history, this was a major. Really it and the Amateur Open should still be considered majors. It's what we saw today that makes for compelling TV. Just great.

Side note: I think this is free to attend. Anyone know about the Walker Cup? Cypress Point ?!

Great win for Sam. It was so entertaining to watch the competition.
A lot of earlier posts about the announcers, however, today they were excellent.

That's good. So you can have NIL deals but just can't cash in a tournament?

Batavia, Ill. February 10, 2022 Suncast is pleased to announce the sponsorship of #1 ranked college golfer, Sam Bennett. Sam and his caddie, Bryce Bennett, will be wearing the Suncast logo on their golf hats in professional tournaments, including the Dubai Desert Classic, which took place the last weekend in January, and the upcoming Arnold Palmer Invitational in March. The Texas A&M senior was granted sponsor exemptions to participate in professional tournaments due to his impressive play during the start of the 2021-22 college season.

Suncast has a long history of supporting young adults in pursuing their dreams. From its strong apprenticeship program with local colleges, to supplying school supplies to community members in need, Suncast understands that supporting the next generation of leaders and innovators is the best way to ensure a bright future. When asked about the sponsorship, Bennett says "Suncast represents quality, innovation and sustainability in the way they conduct business. These are all traits that I identify with. Together we make a great team."

Congrats to Sam on his great win! Also, nice call by Suncast to team up with him. NIL the way it's supposed to work.

may be already addressed here in this thread, but I'm not going back to look....

With this win does it play any impact in him deciding to change his mind and not return to school now? Curious if he wants to ride the momentum into the professional ranks now, or does he stick with his decision to come back to school?

Curious if LIV would offer him now?

Well he doesn't get auto entries into The Masters, British Open , and US Open if he turns pro.

I think you still get the US Open regardless.

The Q school process for KFT starts this week.

I don't see the plan changing. Plus, he was already #3 in the world and truly believed he could win here. This was more affirmation than changing anything. I think the plan is play in the Masters as an Am, play in the US Open as a pro (he has a US Open type game), and maybe he captures some magic in the US Open to get into more PGA and KFT events. If things fall right, maybe even earn a PGAT card for 2024. But most likely full time KFT in 2024 with eyes on PGAT in 2025

Colt Knost will never play in a Masters because he decided to go pro before his Masters invitation. You just never know.

Let this just remind everyone to slow down and enjoy the fact he's the best amateur on the planet right now. It's nothing more than that. Huge accomplishment, tremendous showing of grit, stamina, patience, toughness - all those things, but man chill out everyone.

Beautiful trophy. Havemeyer trophy fun facts:

- it is the only gold USGA trophy

- the original from 1895 was silver. Bobby Jones won the US Am in 1925 and it was at the East Lake club when the club burned down, destroying the trophy

- for 1926, the USGA designed a new trophy, golf and more elaborate design than the silver that burned (just like Sam's)

- until 1992, this original was passed from champ to champ

- when they opened the shipping box in 1992 (won by Justin Leonard at Muirfield), they discovered it was broken. Jack Nicklaus had replicas on display at Muirfield from his wins so they awarded Justin Leonard one of Jack's replicas

- ever since, they just award each winner a new replica

- in 2012, the 1926 to 1992 "original" (since repaired and just on display at the USGA museum) was stolen. It's never been recovered
