Have a very firm opinion or what you need in advance. Don't let them talk you out of it.

Just kidding. Do the opposite of that.

Where at? I'm going to Impact Precision Friday for a driver fitting.

Swing easy. Try out all the shafts. Spend the extra for a forged iron.

impact as well

Who with? I'm with Major.

Let me know how it goes and if you have any recommendations for me if you don't mind.

ok - Should I expect to walk out of there having purchased irons? Or will I have some time to weigh my options?

If the fitter puts on a hard sell, even if you're 100% psyched about the clubs, that'd be a bad sign. Assuming you're doing something around a 5-AW then you're spending $1000-2000 not counting the fee. Certainly sleep on it if there's any doubt.

I've been fitted at Impact Precision twice. My advice (for any fitting) is to have a general idea what you want to spend ahead of time. $1,000 set of irons quickly becomes $2000 if you reshaft them all with nicer shafts. A $500 driver is $800 before you know it.

I'm not saying it is a good thing or bad thing, just that they will try several different shafts and you won't have an idea of what each costs unless you ask, and after you fall in love with some Trackman numbers you've gone way over your budget if you select those shafts. So my advice is to be upfront with any fitter on what you expect to do regarding upgrading shafts and a rough idea of what you are willing to spend on that. It saves you both time and you can focus more on the other parts of the fitting rather than hitting a bunch of shafts you would never buy and then being disappointed because the one you like isn't doable.

Mavrik and Mizuno, for example, give you a selection of different shafts they can fit you in tuned to your swing needs that are included in the cost of the irons/woods. So you can get some customization for no added cost. Or you can get even better shafts if you are willing to spend more - just up to you.

I have not been fitted at Impact but have been fitted multiple times.

Hopefully they are knowledgeable and lead you down the right path.

When you begin looking at dispersion 10 yd to the left and 10yd to the right of the target does not give you a net 0 on dispersion. This position on dispersion I also use on ball flight. They should be able to show the trajectory path on all of the shots and I personally chose the most consistent ball flight. I personally chose a shaft/head combination that produced the most consistent result with the least amount of variance in shot to shot.

I would keep an open mind about price. The $500 you may think you are saving will always be in the back of your mind. " Would I be playing better had I gotten the XYZ shaft/head combo?".

Oh there's gonna be a hard sell, just get your mind right. I tell you what I did. I got them to write everything down and went on Callaway pre-owned and bought the irons I wanted with the shafts that were spec'd for me and paid about half. I'm sure there are similar sites for other manufacturers or check Dallas Golf or others. You may have to be a tad patient but it's worth it.

Sure you've gotta pay for a fitting but you still save big time.

Well the fitting was a bit frustrating.

I tend to hit down on the ball and I could not hit it cleanly off those darn mats (consistently).

Got it narrowed down but not before I got tired. Going back on Wednesday to finish up

Turf interaction is a big deal for me. I could never get properly fitted hitting only off mats.

Newbie here. Is getting fitted super necessary? I'm 6' if that makes a difference.

I've been using an orlimar starter set for a while, but just recently began to really get into the game. (Been playing twice a week consistently). So I wanted to upgrade.

Love the way forged irons look and feel, but should I even venture down that road right now? Still a high-handicap. Actually going to GG this afternoon to look around.

Tlr High handicap beginner wanting better irons. Is getting fitted worth it at this stage of my game.

Getting fitted isn't a huge deal until you have a consistent swing. Most high handicappers may benefit from getting fitted, however I feel like getting fitted for a high handicap won't be beneficial very long if you plan to play yourself to a lower handicap (and probably different swing). I fully anticipate someone telling me I'm wrong here shortly, but go ahead and update your clubs if you want- just spend more time and energy on playing and practicing lots... make a plan to get consistent enough by the end of the year that fitting will help you more.

Just my opinion

Height is only tangentially related to the length of iron you need.

It's determined by your wrist to floor measurement. Plenty of really tall players use standard length irons.

Hitting off mats will really throw you off for irons. Also, make sure they use a trackman or some kind of digital tracking to see your club path and dispersion. Mine did the old school chalk board and really screwed up my custom fittings. Still love the clubs cause of the feel, but had to have another company fix the lie angle.

I went back Wednesday to do some more hitting and did a lot better. In the end I am very happy with the recommendation and plan to hit the recommended club off some grass before ordering clubs:

Callaway Mavrik irons
KBS tour 120 stiff flex shafts

One thing I wish I had done before I went on day 1 was read up on all the things Trackman tracks and what they mean. After day 1 I was able to come back on day 2 with some good questions and get it squared away. This was my first fitting, but wish I had just checked out Trackman's website before going.

biggest thing for me was that I hit down on the ball, have a steep attack angle, and produce a lot of spin. These clubs were the fix and displayed the least spin and straighter shot

Just got finished up with my fitting at Impact with Major.

Purple tracer was my shaft/head (Epic Flash with an X 757 Speeder). Green was the best shot numbers wise but had too much dispersion with that shaft. Light blue is what we went with. We didn't find a head that was head and shoulders better than mine. Tried the Ti3 and a Ping (assuming 425 but he took it from me after 3 swings because the numbers sucked). He didn't want to put me in the Sim 2 but I asked to hit it because we finished pretty early. It was about 5 yards further but a little more dispersion. Not enough to drop the extra cash on it now.

I tried to make it as course-like as possible. Didn't try to really kill anything until we picked a shaft and then I tried to really get on some. I think my best ended up at 333. Ended up with my head set at 8 degrees with a Graphite Design Tour AD M9003. I'd recommend doing it. If I buy through them they're waiving the $100 fitting fee.

Good call to take pictures of each one. So you going with just a new shaft on your epic?

It was a birthday present from the wife, so she wanted to see what she was actually getting me and I told her to take pictures.

Correct, just going to end up getting the shaft.
