What tees to play from?

At my club it goes (Maroon, Black, Whites, Senior, Ladies)

Since I have been playing, I always play from the black tees. Obviously never from the tips. I am 42 and have wondered what the difference would be if I played from the whites.

Is there an age or handicap limit for each tee? I am starting to improve enough to where I want to start playing in some club tournaments and I don't want to get used to one tee box when I would be hitting from another during the tournaments.

What do you guys recommend?

All of them! I fluctuate from a 2-5 handicap and I will even play the ladies tee's sometimes. As long as pace of play is good and you're enjoying it.

I've gotten to where I'll mix and match tees, your course for example, I'll go black/maroon/white all the way through. Makes it difficult to establish a handicap, but it mixes things up when you're playing the same course over and over.

I've heard of groups where they all start at the middle tees and if you birdie you move back, bogey you move up, and par stay the same.

So if you birdie #1 then you play #2 from the tips. You play there until you bogey and move around accordingly.

I am 61 and I alternate between men's and seniors tees. I used to drive it 270 to 280 like everyone else on TexAgs (LOL), but age and knee replacement have taken its toll on my flexibility and club head speed. I now average somewhere around 205-220. When I play with my group, the 2 of us over 60 play the seniors tees and everyone else plays from the men's. It really evens the field for us, especially on 400+ holes in relation to the 47 year old. When I play with my wife we have a standard bet, I give her a stroke a hole and I hit from the senior tees but cannot use a tee. If I am playing with friends or customers and they are playing the Whites(Men's) I usually play from those. I hit a lot more 3 woods and hybrids on the longer holes in this case. The main thing is to have fun and I do if I am on the golf course.

I am a 13 hcp and average drive is 215. I look for tees that play 5800 to 6200. I also look at the slope rating. 127 is about my max. I just have more fun when I can 7 to 9 on the approach versus always having 6 iron to 3 wood in.

Also 61. We have 6 sets of tees. I play 2 up. When that leaves me with a 430 yard par 4 I move up one more on that hole. Same if I need to get under 200 on a par 3. We have four par 3's that play over 225 from the tips. Too long for me.

Love this too.

But question, when I quad, do I get to tee off from the junior tees from 100 yards out?

This is how I would view your tee boxes:
- Maroon: Shoot in the 70's consistently.
- Black: Shoot in the 80's consistently.
- White: Shoot in the 90's consistently.
- Senior: Shoot in the 100's consistently.

Red Tees are almost always ladies tees.

So the ladies tees are 835 yards longer than seniors?

I've found that I'll score roughly the same regardless of the tees I play.
Same here, until I get above like 6800. Then I'm having to hit long irons/hybrid into the greens on par 4s and par 3s. Trying to play safe and shoot for bogeys and maybe getting a GIR a few short par 4s and par 5s.

Think he was wrong... That slope and handicap for the red is definitely a ladies slope and handicap.

I play from the blacks, but most of my playing partners hit from the whites at Traditions.

I'm 49, and hit driver 270 or so on flat ground. 250 3 Wood, and 230 2-iron.

From the Whites, I can leave the driver in the car, which probably saves me 3 shots a round. The biggest difference is the penalty on the long Par 3s (#2 and #16), where I am hitting 4i or 5i 185-200, and it is only a 7i or 8i from the Whites. Especially when it is windy.

I think you should play from the tees where a decently hit Driver lets you reach every Par 4 green with an iron.

Humble brag alert: I have started playing the tips because I was sick of having less than 100 into Par 4s.

I shoot anywhere from high 70s to mid 90s. But, I probably average around 270-290 off the tee. I am better from 120-160 than I am from 60-90. Playing the tips has not affected my scores in the slightest.

our club recently went to a split tee score card where you can play some holes from blues and some from the whites. it's been awesome. Yardage from blues was around 6700 (we have black tees that are over 7000) but the whites were around 6400. the new mixed is just under 6600 and its perfect for me. still challenging on some holes but helpful on others.

I prefer anything over 7600 yards..... That way I can at least hit my 3 Wood off the tee instead of my stinger iron shot

Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

This sounds good. I feel like too many courses are 6100 and then jump up to 6800 or so on the next set of tees. Annoying IMO

That's not a humble brag, that's just a brag. A humble brag would be "I hate not being able to bs on the tee box with my buddies, but I just hit it too far to play from the one ups."

Do it the other way around. Play the par 5s from 3 up, par 4s from 1 up, and the par 3s from the tips.

There is an old guy that wins a lot of money betting that.

Pebble Creek right? At your skill set, you'll have much more fun playing from the whites.

You can mix it up. Play the par 5s and 5 longest par 4s from the whites. Then play the other nine from the blacks.

It is not a good thing, but it is not far off for my game.

The issue is that I tend to have more catastrophically bad shots from 60-90 than I do from 100-150.

I may miss left or right with a 8-P, but I very rarely chunk it severely.

From 60-80, though, my chunk rate is probably 20-30%. And at Traditions, that is invariably into the hard guarding every freaking green.

So my scoring average from 100+ is better than from 60-90, because it includes fewer double bogies.

But I am practicing more with my wedges to fix this.

Moving tees depending on your score on the previous hole is interesting. How does it affect pace of play? We have players in our group that play from different tees and despite our best efforts, it always seems to slow you down a little. Thoughts ?

Lot of folks believe they are better from 100-150 than from 50-100 but the stats rarely support that conclusion.
