Are new irons that much better?

When I used to play a lot and flirted with scratch handicap, I used to use Mizuno T-zoid Sure irons. That was about a decade and half ago. Then I went to Mizuno MP-33, Callaway irons, on and on and ended up with Taylor Made R7 TP that I used for the past 6 years or so.

Granted, my bag is heavily loaded with hybrids today, all the way up to 7. So my iron set really consisted of 8 and 9 irons. With 4 wedges.

Recently I felt the need to find a 7 iron. Well, I looked for a month on eBay but couldn't find a TM R7 TP 7 iron.

On a whim, I bought a whole set of Mizuno T-zoid Sures for $90. Goodness gracious these are easy to hit, long, and smooth (Sensicore insert).

So I started to look for a Gap Wedge..and found this brand new never hit, 16 year old GW still plastic wrapped for $19 on eBay.

Other than perimeter weighing, inserts to dampen vibration, and exaggerated loft changes, are today's irons that much better than Ping Eye IIs.. and/or post Wilson Staff blade era perimeter weighted irons?

The original t zoid was awesome.

Are new irons that much better? Compared to 2007? Yes. Compared to 2013. No

I just upgraded from 2001-02 callaway x-14. So yes. Much.

But I think they are reaching their limits.

So....how are new irons designed after 2010 better than irons from 1999?

MOI primarily I'd say
They are all certainly more forgiving on misfits and generally longer (probably slightly lower loft on most irons is part of It).

lower lofts and longer shafts

The shafts are the same compared to my 2001 models. Loft is 0 to +1

A center hit is a solid +10yds for me.
The bigger difference is the spread across 20 balls is so much better.

I don't think strong loft or shaft length makes one iron better than the other.

T Zoid is from 1999, 17 years old. Compared to Callaway Apex Pro 16, one of the latest releases from Callway, the loft difference is nominal as shorter Mizuno irons actually have stronger lofts. Callaway does have slightly longer shafts. Then again, in the old days, irons with graphite shaft were quarter to half inch longer than their iron shaft counter parts.

So it boils down to manufacturing quality tolerance and clubhead design. If modern, 2010 irons and newer have that much superior design, will it translate to lower scores?

Are you talking about dispersion?

And why would a center hit with new clubs travel 10 more yards?

I personally wouldn't want my center hit to travel 10 more yards. I would rather my non center hits to travel just as far as center hits. One of the reasons I stopped playing blades.

It's funny because I went to blades for the exact reason
Game improvement irons tightened up my distance dispersion however if I miss hit an iron I'd rather be short and not as far left or right than hole high and further left or right. But like all texag'ers I hardly ever miss the sweet spot and my 7 iron flies 200

You haven't heard about hotter, thinner club faces? With better MOI to reduce dispersion?

My dispersion left, right, and average distance was at least twice as "accurate" with new irons (and proper shaft). When I badly missed a shot left/right it was within half a club distance. With old clubs it's a full club.

If you're a scratch golfer you may not notice the impact, but certainly most of us regular players do.

Without science, I can tell you that he worst irons I've ever hit were made by Taylormade. Those clubs just seem to be all about the gimmicks. Prior to that, I hit a set of 97 DCI's, the. Hogan Apex (my all time favorite), and now Mizuno Forged JPX.

The Taylormades almost forced me to change my game arojnd the clubs. They were hot, long, but sprayed wildly
