What's your handicap and what do you think you would shoot if you played in US Open conditions (without the rain) if:

1. You played one ball

2. 2 man scramble with yourself

3. 4 man scramble with yourself

Handicap: 7

1. I don't think I break 100
2. high 80s
3. high 70s

Do I have a gallery and marshals to ball spot?

I'm a 14.

No chance I'd break 110 on my own.

2 man scramble MAYBE I could break 90.

4 man scramble I doubt I could break 80 but maybe.

To be honest, I really have no idea. I've never played in conditions anything close to that gnarly so I don't have anything to use as a frame of reference.

I love these types of hypotheticals and wish it was easier for laymen to play them out.

I'm a 3.

Like I posted in the other thread, I shot a 78 out there from the 6400 yard tees in wet conditions. I think I'd average 90-95 from the tips in US Open conditions (with a spotter). If I hit the ball really well I could maybe justify low to mid 80s. If I hit it poorly, I'd be around 100.

4.5 hcp and I'm pretty confident I'd break 100 assuming I have someone to spot my ball. I don't know how much better than that I'd do though.

Given I play under the same conditions as the pros for the open. And get to walk the course have a yardage book etc.

1) I could break 100 I'd say 89-95
2) low 80s, player B is always a bada$$
3) 75 maybe lower. Two drivers two irons off every box and pick the best. 4 shots at every 3 and 4 rolls at every putt is a huge advantage.

I'm currently a 14 and definitely wouldn't break 100.

With Marshalls? What's triple bogey on every hole? add 9 to that.

24 handicap, so I'm thinking 180+. Probably closer to 200.

Handicap says I'm capable a of shooting a 92, but I'm sure I wouldn't sniff 100 playing straight up. 2 man would probably be about a 90, and the 4 man would break 80 I think. 4 looks at every putt would be huge!

I think 4 putts on some of those greens you're still going to 2 putt and 3 putt frequently. Or maybe I just suck at putting.

I'm a 5ish and I 1 ball I'd shoot 110 ( I played one ball at Dallas national when I was really hitting it well and barely broke 100). 2 balls I might could break 100. 4 balls and I could break 90.

I'm a 2 and don't think I could break 100. Maybe if I played my ass off.

this thread reminded me of a thread that I think was on Texags a year or two ago. back in the 80's, they took the "worst avid golfers", meaning guys who played at least 25 times a year, and put them on Sawgrass from the tips. the worst score was like a 257 and he carded a 66 on the 17th.

I am a 2

Man it is so hard to say.

If I had a practice round, and a spotter, I would bet a lot of money on breaking 100. I would put my o/u at about 90.

Figure you make 1 birdie and 6 pars. That leaves you with 11 holes to play 20 over for an 89.

some of you guys are a little optimistic, i think, mostly on your scramble scores. a 20 hcap will sometimes hit 4 kinda skanky shots in a row....do that once and you might make a 12 on one hole.

I had a 10 HDCP here in Texas and shot 103 from the members tees

I'm afraid I might be too saying I could shoot 90. The only thing I really have to compare it too is playing in PGA conditions, not USGA conditions. I've shot some really good rounds on some really good courses but, like I said, not in those conditions. It's hard to say how it would translate.

The length doesn't really scare me. Neither does the fast greens. That's not to say those two factors would not be challenging and drive my score up but they can be managed. The very tight fairways and incredibly thick rough would be terrifying.

I would certainly break 100...just dont count 15 holes.

I'm about a 12 but my struggles are usually off the tee.

Alone ~ 110
2 Man ~ 85
4 Man ~ 75

If you struggle to get off the tee and play from the tips in Open conditions, I don't see how you shoot 110 as a 12 HDCP. That would be only 20 shots higher than your average score, about 1 shot per hole. No way.

I am a 4 handicap. I think I could break 100 on a decent day, mostly because I can hit it far enough to get around out there.

i think anyone that is in double digits, handicap-wise, would struggle to break 120.

I'm a 10 or 11 and figure i would shoot in that range on one ball.

with two shots every time, i would hope to somewhere around 100.

with four shots every time, i would hope to be somewhere in the 80s.

I'm a 4. I'd feel prettygood about breaking 100 and think I could end up around 90.

For reference, Tony Romo shot +13 as a 2 handicap at the US Open "break 100" challenge at Torrey Pines in 2008. Justin Timberlake was a 6 hcp that shot 98, and Matt Lauer was a 6 hcp that shot 100. But the event was also televised and had a gallery, which for someone not used to playing golf in front of large #'s, that adds another significant layer of difficulty that we wouldn't have to deal with. The round also lasted 6 hours. There was also some average joe who was supposedly an 8 hcp and shot 114. But playing televised golf on a US Open setup had to be a complete shock to the system for him.

Over 5 rounds, Tiger ended up at -1 and Rocco at E in that open.

Currently a 4.9 Handicap.

My Course Handicap at Oakmont would be a 7, and with a Course Rating of 77.8 from the Championship Tees (148 Slope) if I played to my handicap I would shoot an 84.8....so an 85.....IF I played to my handicap.

So based on the numbers, I'd say I'm in the 85-95 range just on the surface.

With greens rolling at a 14....hello 100's

Breaking 100 would be an accomplishment

I'm a 3, and I think the secret to not shooting a million for me would be to not get too greedy off the tee or into greens. What I mean is not get hung up on going for the green in regulation because I "have" to, even from the fairway on tough greens/pin placements. If I could swallow my pride and maybe lay up in front of a green or two per side when the chance of holding the green is minimal (long par 4, etc), even from the fairway, thus eliminate making a handful of huge numbers, I say my chance of breaking 100 is pretty good, and how I chip and putt would determine if shooting in the 80s is a possibility.

I'm a 14 and figure I'd shoot about 130-150. I played Bethpage in '09 not long after the Open and shot around 115 from the middle tees. That rough was unlike anything I've ever seen, and it had already been cut shorter than they played it for the tournament. You back me up to tournament tees, speed up the greens and give me the full rough, the shots add up quick. It's not like I think I will get a quad on every hole, but I know I'd put up some 8's and 10's throughout the round. I'd find a few bogeys somewhere along the way but if I miss the fairway on any hole, double bogey becomes my best possible score unless I hit a miraculous chip or putt.

Right, a big part of is being willing to play conservative and also take your medicine when necessary. So as a 4hdcp, having to adjust your mindset that bogey golf is not only acceptable, but something you'll essentially strategize for on a number of holes. Take the conservative club/line, hack out of high rough sideways vs. trying to advance the ball, etc.

If you let me play a 4 shot scramble with myself, I think I could get it down to about a 90.

I think this is key. Years ago, as an 18hc, I played Royal Troon 2-3 days after The Open Championship. Nowhere near the length, but unbelievable rough and greens hard as iron. I shot 115 because I never took my driver out. Hit everything short, but straight and kept the ball in play.

Flame me if you want, but I say 155

Edit for reality sinking in, and taking another look at Oakmont

From the tips as is now, I'd shoot a 125.
