tour players early on didn't like him because he was young and cocky. i believe he is pretty well liked these days.

Sloan nailed it. Mickelson is a very gracious pro.

Pretty sure it came from the fact that out on the course he was all smiles and high fiving everyone acting like the nicest guy ever and then in the locker room where only the players saw him he was completely differnet and a huge jerk. I think that has changed though now and the players like him.

I hear the survey cited but have never seen proof - at least not in many years.

I've always thought Phil was a phony at least Tiger is a dick 24/7.

I've heard many times that he's a ***** to the pro's but all smiles on tv. All I know is, jerk in person or not, he has an awesome PR guy

I am pretty sure these polls, if they existed at all, were many years ago. I think he is pretty popular on tour today.

what i find hilarious and sad is all of the pros that were unwilling to be honest about tiger before the whole waffle house fiasco. the line for a decade was that we love tiger. he's great. i guess it is because they were scared of being labeled a racist or hater or something.

Phil always seems to genuinely like his fans. he spends lot of time signing autographs for them. the younger guys on tour say he's helped them out. maybe that is age. i don't know.

i remember reading that as well. as i said, it seems he did have an attitude early one and the older guys on tour never liked him after that.

It doesn't bring up surveys where Phil is the most disliked player, at least anything that is less than 7-10 years old.

Show me in the annual survey where they even ask every year on most disliked player. Also, on most Hated Professional Athletes (which is by fans, not players), I've seen Tiger check in at #2 in recent years. No Phil.

I think folks like yourself haven't been keeping up and just like to lazily refer to stuff that is over a decade old.

I know Phil had a bad rep back in college. He was an ass at the Pac 10 championship when it was played in my hometown of Corvallis, OR. My guess is some of that was seen when he got to the PGA.

But, over the years I think he has changed. You just can't be that phony in the heat of the moment.

My guess is he was an ass. Matured over time. Still has a bit of the rep from the early years among some but most like him.

The other tour pros loved Tiger because he made them rich. Prize money increased because of him.

I judge only on personal experience. I met Phil once and he was extremely nice.

I have never met Tiger. I did see him at The Tour Championship (Champions Golf Club) in 2003. At the end of a round the players had to walk down a path with the crowd behind ropes on each side. He pitched a bit of a fit and asked to be taken a different route. Anybody else there who saw that?? All the other guys were signing autographs for kids. That soured me a bit on Tiger when I saw that. Especially because the crowd and kids could hear him.

old story about phil that most have prob seen, but if not, can give some insight on why people might have had a bad opinion of him in the past.

Phil is fake just like Tiger is an a--hole. Just ask some certain tournament officials. Their opinion of Phil behind closed doors is different.

As others have said, I think Phil used to have a bad rep but I think it's a thing of the past. I've heard tons if young pros talk about how nice he is and how he helps them out and stuff. He might have been (and might still be) a little cocky at times, but I think he's a genuinely OK dude for the most part.
