TLDNR: Getting back into golf after 9-year layoff. Used Taylor Made Burner 2.0 (4-AW), Used 3W, Used 3H $322 vs Callow Strata 13-Piece complete set D, 3W, 3H, 4H, 5-PW, P, bag for $199.
=====================================================================
Just getting back into the game after having been out for the last 10-years (played maybe 5-times in that time). Used to play quite a bit but family/work/life got in the way.
My oldest son’s recently took lessons and want to keep playing so dad is thinking about getting back into golf. My current clubs are something I bought at a big=box store in 1987! Wilson WS-2000 clubs (cavity back). Yes, very old. My driver is a Taylor Made Burner+ circa 1994ish…..can’t find my 3W and the SW was left on a course many years ago.
Obviously, golf technology has improved a bit since 1987! Can’t believe how big those drivers are now!
I got my son’s a set of Tommy Armor clubs from Sporty Authority. They are 6’3”+ and needed ~1+ inch and those clubs were 1” longer than standard length clubs and the full set with bag was $169.99 (on sale and 20% coupon!). Figured it was a good starting set for them short of custom clubs for their height. They seem to like them and I’ve hit them a few times and they do hit a lot better than my old clubs.
When I was playing a lot, I actually started to shoot pretty well but inconsistent. Would should 42 on the Front, then 52 on the back (mostly from 2-bad double par holes!).
So I started looking at used clubs on Craigslist and e-bay. Local Golf-Smith also has uses irons. Last night I came across a set of Taylor Made Burner+ 2.0 (4-AW) for $192.93. These were 2009/2010 and honestly look like they were played maybe 5-times. Finish on them was perfect. I hit a few of them on their practice tee’s and they felt a lot better than my old ones (again, no surprise here). Would still need to find a 3W and 3H to get a good playable set of clubs (see used ones all over so ~$130 for Taylor Made RBZ). I could find a driver later. I honestly hardly hit my old driver even when I played a lot since I sliced the hell out of it 75% of the time but could put my 3W in the fairway most of the time. The golf smith price includes a fitting and they will adjust the clubs if needed included in the price (labor, not material like a new shaft or grips). All in all I’d be out ~$325 and still have my old golf bag (no stand, should strap but still in very good shape).
I have also read good thing about the Calloway Strata clubs. The 13 piece set is $199 (D, 3W, 3H, 4H, 5-PW, P, Bag+covers). Seems like a great price, but I really don’t know about them and have yet to try and hit them let alone see if they fit. Golf Smith also sells them, but only online. Don’t know if I can get the store to fit them to me or not. I was thinking I’d stop by tomorrow and see if that price include fitting or no. Appeal here is I will have a complete set of clubs, new bag, etc for less than the mostly complete set of Taylor Made irons, 3W and 3H.
I’m not an expert and don’t see myself playing more than 10-times a year simply b/c of the kids but I also prefer to buy quality products in lieu of junk that I’ll regret in 3-years and want something new.
