shaping the ball

I have been visiting the range pretty much every day trying to develop a consistent swing and I am noticing that I am developing a slight fade on my iron shots. I am pleased with this because it seems like there is more spin on the ball when I'm landing on the green.

After doing a little research (blog searching), I came across an interesting post about shaping the ball and was curious if anyone here shapes the ball on a regular basis or play with their "pattern" shot.

If you do have a pattern, do you think it's best have a slight draw, fade or straight shot?

My naturaly shot is a G.....My misses are D & H.

I've never hit an E in my life.

Up until I was 18 I was a C/F. My dad got me new clubs for my 18th bday and I instantly went from a bad slice to a nice draw. It was the oddest sudden change, and a change that stuck with me even after I changed sets again at age 27.

I don't really have a pattern shot, but my miss is H with a block to the right. I'm one of those that love to shape the ball on just about every shot except with the wedges.

Natural is F.

Miss is I

I actually dont mind the fade as my stock shot.

F most of the time. Also have some H

My natural is F, my miss is H.

I'm about a 6, and I rarely hit a shot outside of my natural fade. I know I can hit a draw if I'm in trouble and need to, but it isn't nearly as consistent. I used to hate my fade because I lost distance. And since I'm not a long hitter to begin with, I had more mid/long irons into greens.

But I realized very quickly that it would take a long time before my draw would become as consistent as my fade, so I stuck with it.

My natural shot is a small G.

My misses are big G, H, or I (very frustrating).

I've hit every shot on there though throughout my life.

My natural shot is the dreaded A.

If you can control/aim for a B, I think it's the longest ball flight. I think G is the preferred ball flight, unless you can be E all the time. C is up there too, as I think the pull-cut is easy to control.

I don't see a shank on there, so I'm out.

F is my preferred shot off the tee, but I seem to have gravitated away from it lately and I'm moving too many right to left. When I'm driving it best, I aim down the left and hit a hard knuckle fade that curves back a little.

G is my typical shot with irons, but if there's a pin on the right side, I'll bend one the other way. Straight shots don't suit my eye, so I'm usually trying to bend it a little one way or the other.

Throughout hs I had a fade and an interlocking grip. After college, I switched to an overlap and retooled my swing for a draw. Natural shot is a draw, but I'll cut it for certain shots if that is needed.

I can't vision a straight shot unfortunately. My driver has always been a fade but I can shape my irons both ways. My miss is almost always a push fade.

All of the above minus a true fade...I can hook the ball anywhere from 5 yards to 25 yards depending on position, I can hit a high draw to get over/around trees, hit it straight by adjusting my club face and swing plane, but I can't fade the ball to save my life...good on dogleg L, but impossible for DL right or approaches that require it L --> R ball flight.

Anyone have suggestions?

Natural G. I can purposely work a big sweeping hook, but I can't purposely hit a fade to save my life. I can only block it.

AtascaAg,

I've noticed that if I concentrate more of rotating my hips on impact versus right arm extension, my ball flight is more of a F than a E. I think this is bringing my clubface from out/in on impact which is encouraging the fade. Maybe try the same thing to achieve the same result?

Jack Nicklaus said "If your not fading or drawing the ball, your ball is headed away from the pin..."

Draw goes further, fade is a little softer when it hits the green. I prefer a draw.

My natural is a C/F, miss is the I/not an option as it's banana sliced off the course at that point
