What are some of your favorites to play and ones to avoid?

For me favorites include -

Timarron CC - Used to work there so it was neat to see it go from public to private

Sky Creek Ranch

There was a course in Carrollton/Lewisville that used to be on the EAGL card but not anymore - name escapes me but it also went private - really fun layout - (CASTLE HILLS - going private 5/1/2014)

Texas Star - Generally in great shape

Iron Horse - can be a slow round on a weekend but the layout is cool

Sugartree - have heard the condition is not what it once was which is disappointing considering the layout was great

Avoid:

Grapevine - Too crowded, bad marshaling, and generally overpriced for what you got

Willow Springs

Tour 18 - too crowded/overpriced

Fossil Creek - Layout was great but staff was awful

Creeks at Beechwood/Doral Tesoro/Champions Circle

Yes - have played LR a few times (just didn't think of it when I made the list initially.)

Perhaps the worst course in DFW I have played is Decatur CC - look it up - major goat pasture.

Favorites publics in my limited experience since moving back

Waterchase-is a championship layout from the tips.
Grapevine- totally disagree with your assessment. My only complaint is the greens are a little sluggish and grainy in summer.
Rockwood- I know thats an odd one but there is something nostalgic about a course unchanged since 1936. But you have to watch for good conditions.
Sky Creek- easy, good conditions. And allows for some low scores.
Sugar tree. - my favorite. Beautiful property. Very challenging.

RE - Grapevine - My opinion is based on when I played there as a kid and not so much overall course conditions - marshaling was very poor and the attitude of the staff was very rude as others have mentioned on this board. I do feel having to sleep in your car to be first in line on a Tuesday for a weekend tee time at a muni of that caliber is over the top like they would require -- it's definitely not bethpage black.

That said, I liked the Bluebonnet 9 the few times I played it as now having 27 holes helped relieve the traffic on a course that regularly exceeded 40,000 rounds per year.

WSJAG- I have heard the same thing from people who played it years ago. My first experience was 11 months ago. I have probably played it 40 times since then and have never had any issues with the staff. They are pretty cool. It does get a lot of play and sometimes getting on it can be challenging. But I have only had one 5+ hour round there that I can remember. It generally moves pretty well and the third nine is a big part of that.

As for my least favorite

Fossil Creek-All because of the staff. Too bad because there is nothing wrong with the course. But we finally had to move our company tournament from there because they just didnt give a ****.

Other than that I havent played a course that I wouldnt go back to. But again it is only 18 months and I have been living at Grapevine Muni for most of the last year.

No love for Tenison Highlands?
Nothing wrong with the Grapevine Muni.
LB Houston used to be suspect, been a while so not up to date on current conditions
Most overrated-most anything CCA runs

Riverside

I like Riverside also - it was always a good value and not real crowded - probably due to some thugs who occasionally robbed people from the apartments that backed up next to the course!
