Is saying someone is choking or can't handle the pressure considered 'reading them the riot act'?

I'm one who does enjoy his brashness. He says it like it is, sometimes very rudely... something you wouldn't say to someone's face... but often, its true...

So if someone is wilting under the pressure... would your ideal announcer not mention it?

Don't mind that he does it but I'm surprised after reading that quote, aren't you? Kinda like if you messed-up all the time at your job and then got on a co-worker for doing the same thing IMO. It's one thing to say a guy is choking or can't handle the pressure, but you'd think he'd be a little more understanding is all.

I know that I myself am not a clutch guy under pressure... I learned that at a much lower level than when Johnny figured it out. Its surprising to hear a guy his resume say that.

But in saying that, I don't think it means he can't observe it when he sees a guy shank one OB or stub a chip or badly miss a putt... pressure does that... some guys love it and thrive... others wilt... is it so bad to point it out? would it be better if he just said... wow, that is a really bad break that he hit that OB at this point in the round?

LF Duval competed against a young Woods, not an in his prime Woods. Miller competed against the greatest if all tome in Nicklaus' prime. To me that's a difference.

Duval was right there when tiger was playing well in the 2000-2001...(when tiger won those 4 majors in a row, some would consider that his prime)... in those years Duval finished 3-8-11-DNP (2000 majors) and 2-16-1-10 (2001 majors)

Duval did the majority of his winning pre-2000... 4 wins in 1998 and 4 in 1999... Tiger won 8 times in 1999... and only 1 major that year... so its not like Tiger was just a guy out there when Duval was winning and becoming the #1 player in the world

I like Miller more than most on here. I actually get a laugh out of his antics sometimes. I know he's dead serious about how good he is/was, but I don't let his unabashed bragging ruin the broadcast.

Could you imagine Miller on this board. Think about that for a second. We all have varying degrees of skill, handicaps, success, etc. One or two of us played in college. But, unless it is a thread specific to what you scored, what you think you could shoot on a course(see Merion thread), etc, we are generally pretty modest(with a couple of notable exceptions). I can just imagine Miller on here:

Topic-What wedges do you carry?
Agsalaska- A 54 and a 60. One is a Cleveland the other a Titleist. I like the.......
Watty-Titleist Vokey 54 and 58. I use them because......
ProudAggie: Mizuno 50,52,54,56,58,60,and 64.

Miller:Well, when I won the US Open in '73 I used the Hogan Apex wedges. I learned after coming in second the year before that....Now when I won in the Open Championship in Scotland I carried.....Guys today have no clue what they are doing and are not half as good as I was back in 73.

The following exchange between Roger Maltbie and Johnny Miller has never occured (that I know of, anyway), but it's not hard to imagine that it could have.

JM: Rog, that was, uh, errr, a terrible tee shot to hit it in that bunker, wouldn't you say?

RM: (whispering) Well, John, the fairway's only 18 yards wide down here some 300 yards off the tee, so he was hitting to a small target. He's got 230 to the flag, 210 to carry the creek, and the ball is sitting below his feet. In addition, the wind has freshened back into his face, so this will be a heck of a shot if he can pull this off.

"CRACK!"

RM: He's caught it cleanly and it's on a terrific line if it's enough club...and it is! What a shot!

JM: Uh, Rog, eeee, errr, that's uh, gonna leave him with a crazy super tough putt coming back down the hill. Not a good shot at all, he won't be happy when he gets to the green and sees that he left the ball above the hole.

RM: John, it was a 1 in 10 chance he would even hit the green given the circumsatances, so

JM: (interrupting, irritation in his voice) yeah but that putt's gonna be impossible, so, like I said, not a good shot.
-----------------------------------------------
And that is why I can't stand him. Every shot that doesn't come to rest center cut or inside the leather never gets any credit from him. I have no problem calling a bad shot out, but he constantly looks for something negative to say about good shots.

to add:

Miller: this little 5 footer is going to leak a little left, right Roger?

RM: actually john its more like 8 feet and its gonna go right.

for agsalaska and KatyAg, I can almost hear his voice when I read that.

Joe Buck: Nasty slider buckles Fielder, giving Yu Darwish his eighth strikeout of the game.

Tim McCarver: Joe, in this sequence you can see how Darwish keeps his knees flexed at the same level whether throwing a fastball, curve or change....it's his consistent delivery that keeps the batter from sitting on certain pitches.

Johnny Miller: Yeah I was the first one to do that, then Nolan Ryan saw it and copied me.

I'll have to listen more closely. When someone hits a bad shot he says it's a bad shot but I don't hear him boasting like you guys. You'd think someone number 23 all time in PGA Tour wins would realize he's no better than us.

I hear Miller compliment players on great shots all the time. I think this might be a case of selective listening by Texags.
