check your ego and buy a Cleveland Niblick 56. This thread is not for you low HC'ers that have a strong short game. If you have a full time job and you're like me and you are married with kids and just don't have the time to develop good, confident wedge play, I STRONGLY recommend at least trying this club out.

The Niblick is part putter, wedge and rescue club. It comes in different lofts, but I would try the 56 first. It is so damn easy to hit, and almost impossible to shank. Today was my 2nd round with it and I got up and down 6 times, something I've never done before. Even when I didn't hit it well I still got within 10 feet and had a decent chance at saving par.

The best thing about this club is the confidence it gives you at address. All you have to do is a simple back and forth swing (you can swing it like a putter or chip it like a wedge.) It's very easy to hit the ball where you're aiming, like a putter you just point and shoot. Knowing with almost certainty that you are NOT going to blade or fat your chip gives you the confidence you need to pick your target and hit it.

If it helps you enjoy the game, more power to you.

I thought about using it before but I couldn't decide on what club to take out of the bag.

Id get one, but wouldn't know where to put the ball retreiver.

I took the 60 degree wedge out of the bag to make room. I can't hit flop shots anyway and I have too many demons with that club...

And getting up and down from 90 feet sure as hell brings more enjoyment to my game.

Are chippers legal clubs

Yes, it's legal. I wouldn't call it a chipper. It has much more versatility. You can take a full swing with it, although I have not hit farther than 40 yards out so far.

Of course they are. Why wouldn't it be? Your mid HC ego think otherwise Ross?

I know there are rules regulating them didn't know exactly what they were.

I have always called these clubs "chutters," part putter, part chipper

Can you anchor it? If not, do not want.

But you are right no way would I ever use one on the course. Way to vain for that. Though don't really care if anyone else uses it. We need to meet up on the west side of Houston some weekend and play

Played a nine hole match yesterday at Teravista and used my Niblick 56 to pitch in for eagle from 30 yards out. It was a short, down wind par 4 and I crushed my drive. I also got up and down two other times using it. I f'ing love this club.

Again, if you are struggling with the short game, you should try it.

^^^ question should be why the heck do you have a 30-40 yard shot on a short par 4? Keep the driver in the bag, get a 5-6 iron out and get 200-220 off the tee and leave yourself a nice gap or pitching wedge in. Give yourself a full swing rather than trying to hit an awkward distance and reduce your risk of skulling/blading it. Always hit to your favorite distance and give yourself a shot to get to the green. Too many of us amateurs wanna be long off the tee and leave weird yardages because they want to "crush" their drives.

Had a buddy of mine buy one of the clubs and they look silly. It helped him, which is great and they def serve a purpose. I just try to avoid half swing shots and am generally ok (not great by any means) around the greens.

He made a freaking 2 on a par 4. Sounds like he did hit to HIS favorite distance.

Oh, and thanks for sharing Marine. I don't have a spot in my bag right now. But I'd swing a turd on a stick if it lowers my score.

Atasca - Much of the time I'd agree with you about hitting a shorter club, except I'd do it to avoid the trouble that a longer hitting club could bring in to play, especially if the shorter club can get to 100 yards out. #5 at Teravista is a very wide open easy hole and I have driven the green before when it's been downwind, like it was on Wednesday. I pushed my drive about 20 yards right of the green.

I would disagree with those that think it's better to be 100 yards out (or whatever your ideal full swing wedge distance is) than it is to be 30 or 40 yards out. When you are only 30 to 40 yards out, your margin of error is much greater than from 100 yards out, especially if it's windy. You have to hit a really crappy shot to miss the green from close in. I know that many folks (myself included before I got the Niblick) can shank these short shots because they are somewhat awkward, but I still think you have better odds if you are closer. I know better players than me that would disagree, just my opinion.

LOL...5/6-iron that goes 200/220yds. Are you senorchipotle? For a lot of us, 200yds is a 3-hybrid. Or even a 3-wood. Might as well just pull the driver and crush it. It's more fun that way.

Sounds like you brought trouble into play with the driver. If you're pin high, then you're definitely far enough to have hit the lake on the left if you pulled/hooked it.

Touche, HouAggie. I couldn't resist going for it, and my miss is usually a push, usually...

I like the play. You don't make many eagles by laying up!

Does this club generate some spin on the ball - will it check up? Or does it play more bump-and-run type shots? Thanks.
93MarineHorn
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It does put some spin on the ball and will check up a bit, though not as much as with a wedge.
93MarineHorn
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You definitely need some room for the ball to run out a bit. It's definitely not good if you're shortsided and hitting to an up hill pin.

Thanks for the info. I am intrigued and may test one out. Is this picture below the club you have - I've seen some niblick II sand wedges that are all black, but the below seems like more of what you are describing, correct? - Edit - the club below but 56 degree -

The above-pictured Niblick does not appear to be manufactured anymore. I don't see it on Cleveland's site. All I see is the black Sandwedge-type Niblick on their site. The above Niblick looks like it has square grooves - probably why it is not made anymore.
93MarineHorn
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Coppell - I have the all black one, not the model you show pictures of. I think that model is non-conforming and they no longer make it.

If you are near a Golfsmith, give them a call and if they have one you can check it out. I stumbled across one at the putting green area two weeks ago at Golfsmith in Austin. After a few chips I knew I had to give it chance.

Bought Niblick - and seriously shot 78 today. I break 80 maybe once a year. Typically shoot in the 80s. I had not played in 3 months or even swung a club. Did not even have a chance to practice hitting Niblick before round and did not have chance for range balls. Stepped out cold. I was hitting the ball really well today. Niblick 56 has now replaced my 60 degree. I was able to chip consistently all day when I missed the greens. Really helps 50 yards and in. I think I will only get better with it. I was pretty good with an open faced 60 degree but would get 1 or 2+ chunks a round that could really cost me - the ball has to be hit so perfectly to hit that shot and there is a fine line for error; Niblick feels un-chunkable and easy to aim. The guy I was playing with tried it for a few chips/pitches and then was using it the rest of the round; he is now going to buy the Niblick. Thanks 93Marine.
