How many of ya'll DIY when it comes to this? I really don't feel like paying 8-10 bucks per club at Edwin Watts or Golfsmith.

other than grips, double sided tape, and cutter...what else would you need???

FWIW you can buy a card a golfsmith for like $49 ($29 if you buy a club) and you get regrip labor free for ~30 clubs. Definitely cuts the labor cost.

Also, if you like the thickness of your current grips, be sure to strip the existing grip tape prior to putting the new tape on. It doesn't seem like a lot, but one extra layer of tape is actually noticeable in my experience.

I got mine regripped at the golf store in Bryan and just paid the $1 they charge per club. It might be easy for some people but I'd rather just spend the $14 and know it got done right rather than attempt it myself.

This is one reason I do it myself. Not that regripping clubs is difficult, and not likely a shop would screw it up, but I have had sets of clubs done by someone where a club or two just didn't feel right. Get a six pack, turn on some music, and DIY. Once you do it a time or two, you'll never pay someone again.

Also, when I buy grips, I typically buy 4-5 extra. That way, when a grip on a frequently used club starts to feel slick, I can change it in about 10 minutes at home vs having to take it to someone.

I use a rubber clamp similar to this one to hold the club in place and it makes the job so much easier.

I have done them myself in the kitchen. I swore without the right tools I wouldnt do it again. A vice with the right clamp makes the job so easy.

If you've got metal shafts, do it yourself. Let the pros work on graphite. And instead of the fancy solvent I always use lighter fluid. Heres how i do it. Once you strip the old grip off, apply tape to new shaft - make sure you get tape far enough down the shaft to where the end of the mew grip will be - and remove the backing. Grab one of the new grips, put your finger over one end and pour lighter fluid into the other end. Cover the other end and work the fluid around to coat the inside of the new grip. Now pour the remainder of the lighter fluid onto the tape - this will activate the glue on the tape and you'll have about 30 seconds before it starts to set - shove the new grip onto the shaft - make sure you get it all the way on and that you get the logo where you want it. Good luck!

There's a lot of reason to pay someone if your time is worth more than $1 per club.

And if a club isn't done right, any reputable shop would redo, especially if you are a repeat customer.

This and engine oil changes are in the same category; don't DIY unless it's your actual job, you're flat broke and/or you don't have kids. Otherwise, your time should be more valuable to you.

If you use air you can have your grips done in less time than it takes to drive to the golf store and drop them off/pick them up.

You don't even need a vice really.

I do it without a vice

So now you're telling me what I have to enjoy doing and what I should spend my free time doing (or not doing)? Thanks Obama.

Nom...My time is valuable and I am also proficient at regripping my own clubs. Factor in time it takes to drop them off and pick them up, and it's probably a wash. Plus, I enjoy doing my own club work (shafts, grips, grinding wedges, etc), and again, I know it's done right.

I let the shop do it. When you regrip your own clubs you still have to go to the store to buy the grips/solvent/tape etc. I calculated the cost of buying the tape/solvent and decided .50/club or $7 wasn't worth it to me. Now for those that might order online in bulk and doesn't like the fact that you're without your clubs for 3 days then by all means do it yourself. I've got nothing against that.

Our office is about a quarter mile from a PGA Superstore, so my usual approach is to drop them off at lunch one day and pick them up at lunch the next day. They have a 24 hour turnaround policy, and oftentimes it's much faster than that to where I'll get them same day on the way home from work. Labor $1 per club. I've never had any issues with improper installation there either. The club repair staff at that one seems to be fairly experienced (i.e. old-timers instead of some teenage kid).

I did it myself in my younger years, but personally, I equate it to mowing the yard or changing my oil. All things I've done many, many times, but at this point I'd rather just pay someone to do it and spend my time on other things. To each his own in that dept.

Like 1982Ag said is how I have always done it. I always use a tee in the butt end so i can have both hands free

I usually pay to have such things done, but once I did it myself, enjoyed doing it. With that said, I attempted regripping my putter last weekend with a thicker grip. Couldn't get on, so had my wife take it to GolfSmith.
