So I went to PGA Superstore yesterday and was messing around with some putters. I hit a pretty standard oddesy next to a Scotty and the difference was amazing to me. The oddesy had an audible click when contact was made with the ball and the Scotty didnt. You couldn't feel the ball leave the face of the Scotty.

I realize there is obviously a difference in quality and that is reflected in the price, but my question is what is that difference?

Scotty's are actually supposed to provide more feedback on mis-hits. Very good ball strikers want to know when they aren't making perfect contact.

You were obviously hitting putts right on the sweet spot if you didn't feel the ball. The idea behind a high dollar putters that when you do strike the ball well, the ball should roll a consistent distance every time. Though, with today's technology, you're probably going to get a consistent roll with a lot of putters.

The downside to Scotty's is that when you hit a putt off-center, the ball loses significant roll out. That's why it cracks people up to see a 20+HC use one.

Composite-faced putters are opposite. They are supposed to increases your margin for error and allow minimal distance loss on off-center strikes. The downside to composite putters is that you don't really know if you're making good impact.

If you are dedicated to practicing putting *a lot*, buying a milled-face putter isn't a bad idea, but you can expect to hate the putter if you don't practice.

jj, I agree about the Clevland Classics. I prefer the #1. It has measured up against every high-dollar Scotty that I have played.

It is very important to get the putter fit to you as well. Length, lie and swing path help ensure a more consistent strike on the face.

Went ahead and pulled the trigger on a new Scotty Golo S5 today. Put for about 35 minutes in the store and loved it, went to the range last night and putt for about an hour and loved it.

It looks so great next to the ball in my stance, and it instills some confidence in me putting. I'm not the greatest putter, but putting is all about confidence and I didn't have any using my last putter.

Looking forward to getting on the course with it this weekend.

As a hacker with a bigger budget than I have quality game (~20 Hcp), I appreciate the Cameron comments above. I had no idea...thanks!

My current putter is an old Never Compromise mallet from 2002. I don't like the smooth face on it and am convinced that some of the newer club designs would help me get more consistent spin and better distance control.

I've been thinking about getting one of the new Odyssey Metal X putters (Father's Day maybe?). Any opinions on the Odyssey putters for the weekend hacker? I assume that the insert face style would be relatively forgiving. I haven't hit them enough to be sure but I'm leaning toward the #5 or #7.

Thanks!

I wouldn't waste $300 on a Scotty Cameron.

It cracks me up to watch other people crack up over someone else's gear.

Anyways...
I had a $300 gift card to Golf Galaxy and decided to get a Scotty to replace my trusty $20 putter. For the first two months, I wanted to throw it into the lake. I offered to sell it for $200 with no takers. I've since gotten the feel for it and it's probably my favorite club.

I've got a 2ball Metal X and I like it. Its a much "hotter" face. If you're looking for a soft feel with the ball you're not gonna like it, but they just feel good to me. I'd probably get some more opinions and play with one but I've been real happy with mine.

Played bridlewood today and putted with it for the first time. While there is still a learning curve, I love this thing. I felt confident with every stroke. Only missed 1 inside 6 feet. And only had 1 mi****.

If I'd spend 300 on a driver why wouldn't I spend 300 on a flat stick that I use more than a driver?

Y'all sure are a sensitive bunch. I wasn't insulting any of you so I'm not sure why some of you got defensive when I said I wouldn't waste $300 on a putter.

I have a Scotty Kombi S. I won it in a pennywise auction a few years back. I love it. Not everyone who has a certain club actually bought it for themselves or paid full retail. I paid about $60 including shipping for my Scotty

I'm not sensitive. But I don't come on here knocking your equipment. I didn't ask if you thought it was worth the money I asked what the difference was.

Let's all run over to the Outdoors board and make fun of people who spend $500 on a cooler.

Got one of those too. But I was given that one because my dad wasn't using it after winking it in a CCA raffle a few years ago

when my cameron putter fails me i put him on ice- literally I put him edge out in my Yeti cooler and then 5 days later when the ice melts we play again

I am a 20 handicapper but only putt about 20 times a round-
