Didn't want to hijack the Redstone thread. What do you think it costs to overseed a course like Redstone? Are there any disadvantages to overseeding except the costs?

I've played Redstone right before the tournament and it was amazing. TPC San Antonio Oaks was perfect like that too. I love the overseeding. I've always wondered why more courses don't do it. I assume it's simply cost prohibitive, but maybe there are other reasons.

What say you, Supers?

$90,000 in seed alone I bet... Then factor in water, fert, labor to mow it, up keep on equipment that wouldn't be used as much if overseed wasn't used... Then factor in recovery time (after overseed dies) water, fert, labor, on thin stressed Bermuda that had to compete with the overseed.. It can all be done seamlessly with $$$$$$$

Depending on the seed it can be extremely expensive. It's not just the cost of the seed, it's the overall maintenance cost. Mowing, fertilize ect. during the winter months. Otherwise the dormant turf requires a lot less upkeep. I'm not sure how many courses spray to kill out the cool season grass this time of year, but some of those herbicides can cost upwards of $300 a quart. In my opinion dormant greens roll as good or better than seeded greens. Seem to roll somewhat faster.

Many courses are getting away from it because of the ultra-dwarf grasses that are out now. They roll just as good as the overseeded greens and recover much better in the spring without the competetion of the overseed. As for the other areas of the course, you must balance cost of overseeding (both $$$ and how much it hurts recovery of the bermuda) vs how much play you have in the winter and early spring.

I've never minded a dormant course and also look forward to them rounding into great shape much more quickly in the spring.

I like over seeded greens, but playing dormant fairway is kind of fun. Different anyway. I never understood over seeding tee boxes. You're using a tee anyway, does it matter if there's grass?

Not keeping grass on a tee box can cost much more as the grading will quickly degrade from the wear and tear. If I'm not hitting a driver it really matters to me if there isn't even cover.

Since we have agro experts here:

I hired a moronic yard man to mow my lawn while I was out of town a couple years ago. Well, he ended up planting winter rye in my yard and it still grows every winter. Now, I have to mow every week year 'round...and it sucks. Not to mention that it competes with my bermuda, which now looks like crap.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of the winter rye? I've looked online, but haven't found a good solution.

LOL...smart guy. He's trying to have jobs available during the winter months when mostp people don't need their lawns to be mowed.

Yea, smart enough to get fired. Nobody on our street will hire that moron ever again. (He planted it in 5 other yards)

Products with trifloxysulfuron-sodium as the active ingredient will smoke out the rye. Monument is a product with that particular AI. Problem is I believe it is not available without a license. Other option is to wait till the Bermuda goes dormant in the winter and spray the rye with round-up. Second option is probably the easiest and cheapest.

Image should take it out no problem.

Just wait for bermuda to go completely dormant then round-up the whole thing. Problem solved and you are out like $20. Just make sure its totally dormant. Otherwise the other suggestions are good and probably safer
