I've never played night golf, although I've been with my dad a few times as a kid when he did (1980's or 1990's).

Tonight, on the driving range, I stayed late when there were only a few of us left including a couple of the cart barn kids hitting around a modern night time golf ball.

The night time golf ball I saw seemed to be much brighter than the ones I remember as a kid. I held this golf ball, and I don't recall seeing a hole drilled in it that you'd insert a small glow stick. Strange. Also, how much distance do you really lose? I know they say 80% or so of regular full distance is about average. Does that seem about right?

Also, I noticed this website says (at least with their product) that you're not supposed to hit hollow metal woods with their product as the ball can damage your club. I never remember this. Is that true? That's kinda a bummer. I hear perssimon woods are okay--not that anyone carries those anymore.

I played alot of night golf in fall 2010, every week actually and into spring 2011. We used those led ones, not sure if same brand.

Night golf is fun and the ball looks like a bullet in flight.

However the ball sometimes would go dark at impact and it would just be lost obviously. This happened to me about once every 9 holes, normally on tee shots. I used a pretty new titleist driver at the time and noone I played with or in our weekly scramble ever damaged their clubs, although the balls are noticely harder. If you have a brand new driver I probably wouldn't recommend it. I played in pretty cold temps most of the time around 40-55 degree and I would think that would hurt the club worse. I heard those stories about it damaging the driver so I used my old one about half the time.

The ball goes alot shorter off the driver and gets proportionally better. I would say 20-25% loss for driver but as you work your way through the bag it's not as dramatic. I would only lose maybe 5% with a wedge and 10% with an 7 iron if that makes sense.

Anyways it's fun as **** but bring back up balls. They are easy as **** to see but they seemed to break alot on contact (turn their light off) and then you are out of luck.

We used these LED balls

The green ones were the brightest, the reds next brightest, with the blue being the dimmest.

I liked the blue ones the best, I found the green ones were too bright.

I agree that I wouldn't use your favorite driver. Those balls feel really hard when you hit them, and I've heard stories of them cracking driver faces.

I've also experienced D's issue of them turning off when you make contact. Odds of finding it when that happens are obviously next to zero.
