A woman who is a social worker in Lubbock signed her baby in at a day care yesterday but didn't take him in for some reason. She went to pick him up after work but they told her he wasn't there. She went back out to her car and he was dead in the back seat. The baby's dad is an education professor at Tech. You hear about this happening every summer it seems like. God bless this family.

That was my worst nightmare when my daughters were infants and toddlers. I drove them around a lot and the thought of having a brain meltdown and leaving them in the car haunted me every day.

You know how sometimes you'll place an object somewhere so you can always find it....and you put it in such an obvious place that you can't find it when you finally look for it? That's similarly the way I thought it would go down if it ever did. Thank God it didn't.

This is a tragic story, and my prayers certainly go out to the family.

Having said that, I can't imagine how anyone could forget about her baby for an entire day and leave it in the backseat of the car to suffocate in the heat. It's not as if this child were a set of car keys that can be easily misplaced. When these things happen I think it points to greater problems the parent has. I can't fathom doing something like this without knowing about it; it just doesn't compute with me.

I agree 100%, I have 3 kids now and there is no way in hell that I could forget about them in the car, no way. While I feel extremely sorry for their loss, what in the HELL was she thinking!

I can see it happening though if she thought the baby was in the daycare.

Awful, awful story. That poor woman will have to deal with this guilt for the rest of her life. Hopefully the story will end here (litigation wise), becuase it certainly appears to be a tragic accident.

Sad story. They'll be in my prayers.

Grego, I agree, there's no punishment that could be imposed that would be worse than what she's going through now and in the future, I'm sure.

Ditto to Col.'s comments.

It looks like no one could forget about a baby in the car, but that's easy for me to say since I don't have kids. I know how hectic things would be around the house when I was growing up and my mom would be trying to get kids ready for school and herself ready for work. The whole thing really sucks and God only knows the guilt the poor mother must be feeling.

I wonder why the daycare didn't notice that he was signed in but not there and contact her.
