As somebody who was sentenced to grow up in Garland, the people who gave the advice before are correct.
I grew up on Firewheel's Old Course and the area has really grown from there with new developments.
I-30 and Broadway ... you're playing with fire there.
I second playing the Bridges (27 holes), but the refurbished Lakes and the traditional Old course are nice at Firewheel, as well. Great thing about that area is there are about 10 quality courses within 15 minutes or so.
The FIRST thing you should do is go to Hubbard's. The quicker you realize it is all downhill in Garland after that, the better off you will be.
As for sports, the GASA isn't bad, but like most everything else (i.e. entertainment, commerce, etc), you probably have better options in Richardson and especially Plano.
Hope it goes well for you. And get ready for the insults. The only thing Garland is known for is LeAnn Rimes, David Koresh and being the inspiration for King of the Hill.
