Despite being a heavy underdog, the Tech football team manhandled No. 4 California, 45-31, in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl, giving head coach Mike Leach his third straight bowl victory.

The Tech men's and women's basketball teams followed that up by reaching the NCAA Sweet 16, making Tech the only athletic department in the country to win a bowl game and advance its two basketball teams to the Sweet 16. North Carolina came the closest to accomplishing the same feat as both its men's and women's basketball teams advanced the Sweet 16. The Tar Heel football team, however, lost to Boston College, 37-24, in the Continental Tire Bowl.
