according to sources Dave Campbell's mag has him picked as the sophomore of the year in the big 12 next year.I thought according to ketch, texaus, and numerous bigmouths of the orange persuasion-he was just a throw-in to get Jorrie Adams and would basically suck.Wonder what you think now?

That's funny stuff. He'd have a decent shot at being our 4th tackle.

Bryant had a whopping 3 tackles behind the line of scrimmage last year (1 sack and 2 TFL's). Not really anything to write home about for a starter.

For my tastes, I'm almost happier to have him then Martellus; a stud DL is made even more solid with a guy like him vying for starting time, and I gotta believe all the attention his little bro has gotten is putting a bit of a spark in him to shine as well.

No disrespect for Martellus or what he can do for our presitge, but in four years, I believe that the M.Bennett who makes Aggieland the proudest will be Michael.

Then HOW did he get to be a Freshman ALL-AMERICAN and Big XII Freshman of the Year?

Bryant plays Nose Tackle you stupid jackass. His job is to make sure that it takes at least two players to block him, not to make a large number of tackles. Sips are morons.

Bryant has been a super pick-up for the ags and was under-rated by Ketch. Ketch said last year that Bennett was not a throw in and admitted he was a good prospect. Jack was rated #12 in TX by Ketch.

No way Jack is the best Soph in the Big 12. Who wouldn't pick Peterson? Okam is also better in my opinion but is splitting time w/ 2 all-conf DTs.

Peterson is the at the top of the list, but he plays the position with the highest amount of injury in football, and he runs too high; he's going to get hurt too badly to get drafted if he doesn't keep his pad level down... he needs to go straight into the pros at the first possible moment and lock in the money now.

Okam will be drafted higher than Jason Jack.

Red is a good player on your line. He'd be battling to be in the 3-deep on ours. He might be able to beat out Janzen and Marshall. Lokey is probably a toss up.

atxaggie, are you too dumb to know the difference in that situation from this one? That wasn't written by a horn fan. That wasn't gloated over on orangebloods or texags. We don't pound our chests over meaningless pre-season awards like the aggies are on this thread. Feel free to do so, though, if it makes you feel better about knowing you are going to lose 6 in a row to us.

By the way, Bryant's preseason award is nice, but he still would be fighting for a spot on the two-deep at Texas. If you put Bryant at Texas and either Okam or Lokey at A&M, then Okam or Lokey would be the one was freshman all-American and preseason sophomore of the year. When there are only a couple of freshmen that start, it's pretty hard to not make freshman AA. I would think that aggies, who claim to know so much about football, would understand this. If there were two All-Big 12 tackles at A&M, Bryant would have played sparingly, much like Okam and Lokey did.

Brandi: Honest question since I have always known more about offense than defense. I thought that a true nose tackle only existed in a 3-4. If you're in a 4-3 or 4-2-R, what distinguishes one of the tackles as a nose and the other not? Because the name signifies that they line up across from the nose of the ball, as in directly across from center. If A&M still uses a nose tackle, wouldn't that make it a very unbalanced line?

Brandi- Like most of the sources that you reference they do not know the difference between DE and DT. Okam was honorable mention on their list and as I stated he was/is splitting time w/ two all-conference caliber DTs. He can be better than Wright who if he returns to form (healthy) will be a top 10 NFL pick.

The 3-4 employs a Nose Guard... a NG plays directly over the center. The position is similar in that the job is to take up a maximum number of blocks. The technique is almost 100% bull rush.

A Nose Tackle in a 4-3 or 4-2-R usually plays in the Center Guard gap opposite the Defensive Tackle.

A NT might bull rush or might play a shade technique or whatever. Sometimes his job is like a NG in that he is designated to do what coaches call "eating blocks" in a straight rush. Other times he might simply occupy both the C and the G by putting a hand on both at the snap and pushing them up, keeping them off of the LBs and allowing lateral movement behind the line of scrimmage.

How long do you want to ignore this user?

P.S. The NG is what makes the entire 3-4 work.

Watch the best NFL defenses these days; at the snap, the NG will try to run over the Center. The OL set will bump him from either the right or the left side, and sometimes engage him with two players.

The best NGs either run over the bump side (because that's where the ball is probably going to pass by) and break free, or get so far into the backfield that the opposite Guard or Fullback has to engage them (him), too.

Good examples: The Patriots ran a 3-4 with a NG last year when they won the Super Bowl. Tampa Bay ran the most famous 4-3 scheme with a Nose Tackle in the NFL the year they won the Super Bowl (2002), taking up blocks with the NT in order to rush from the DT side with Warren Sapp.

By the way, Oakum and Bryant both play the same position (Nose Tackle), but BRYANT was the Sporting News Big XII Freshman of the Year as well as being a Freshman All-American.
LonghornDub
How long do you want to ignore this user?
BI - We don't use a ng fulltime in our 4-3. Sometimes it's balanced. When our second shift of tackles was in, we usually had Lokey over center.

BTW, I like Bryant a lot. Good player. It just points up the difficulty of recruiting. The coaches don't know who's gonna be the best when they get them in practice against each other. Wright, Crowder, and the DE we had a few years ago from the private school up in Ft.Worth or Dallas are cases in point. They all excelled as freshmen, but nobody predicted it.

You don't use a NG at all in your 4-3. You use a Nose Tackle:

Nose Tackle 97 Frank Okam | 95 Derek Lokey OR 92 Larry Dibbles

http://www.mackbrown-texasfootball.com/pages/depthchart.html

This is a fundamental defensive shift. You didn't use one last year. I was yanking Salty's chain.

Invictus - Hightower is the one who's swallowed a lot of aggression, along with a lot of cheeseburgers. At 355, he should be the fattest starting offensive lineman in the state. He looks like Maddog's been training him.

BI - Michigan start running right up the gut in the third quarter. Fortunately, they quit before we figured out how to stop it.
