I'm only assuming he is referring to the QB's name, or his zip code

Nothing to see here. Charlie playing chess while ND is playing checkers

Do you also think maybe one of the reasons for so much dis-information between the so-called 'insiders'? Feed these guys varying info so that ND has no certain guy to plan for?
Honestly I think naming a starter is over-rated from a planning standpoint - ND knows both QB's will play. They have tape on one, and not so much on the other. I think that plays more into our favor than anything else

He kinda knows what plays will be called and who will call them.

When you hold back publicly announcing the QB, in order to get leverage to start the season, you know you are in deep trouble.

Have they been dropping the ball by not stopping by opposing high schools to see if they have tape on Buchelle?

Chollie is smarter than the average bear, that's for sure. He's gonna baffle them with bull sheet.

Don't think ND gives a rip who chollie starts. You press cover on the outside, line your 300+ pounder right over the true freshman center, blitz the hell out of both of them to make bad decisions and if my man starts prep for runs off tackle because he can't run to the outside against them.

Yeah. No playbook Gilbert puts a lot of pressure on the QB to make the decisions. The O-line just kind of guesses on the blocks?

Should be as entertaining as the TCU game last year...until it gets boring in the second quarter, that is.

On offense, don't try to get cute. Run in between the tackles, and when you're tired of that, throw off of play action. The sips won't have any kind of pass rush, so take your time, and for God's sake, don't overthrow the guy that's wide open.

Burton:

quote:
Some news and notes from yesterday...

**

I am told Shane Buechele continues to lead the quarterback race. Buechele understands when and where to go with the ball better than his senior counterpart, Tyrone Swoopes. And can execute the throws better, too. Swoopes, however, has improved, especially on vertical passes. But, I am told, it is the thought that he still makes too many mistakes, some mental and some just poor throws, for an offense to gain any sort of reliable consistency. Furthermore, when Texas goes to a two-deep safety look in scrimmage against Swoopes, the only thing the offense can do with any effectiveness is the run the ball and even that has been hit and miss (more on that later). The short passing game is completely absent.

There were five Swoopes throws in particular yesterday that either could have been interceptions or were ill-advised at best. Any of them could have been drive killers. By comparison, during the scrimmage, Buechele made two "poor" throws. One of those bad throws was his only "poor" decision. In other words, Buechele is making smarter throws and his throws are more often on target than Swoopes, allowing for more sustained drives against the defense. If Texas had to play today, I'm told Shane Buechele would be the starter unless Charlie Strong overruled the offensive coaching staff.

**

Another problem surfaced in Saturday's scrimmage. The offensive line is having problems, maybe more than expected. Whether it's run blocking or pass protecting, I'm told it's leaking way too much. The unit is simply not gelling at this time. It could be the absence of Zach Shackelford, the new position of Kent Perkins or even the combination of Perkins, Brandon Hodges or Denzel Okafor and Jake McMillon. Long story short, I'm told pass protection yesterday was a MAJOR issue.

Hey, other than the offensive line and a possible bad starting QB, that offense is gonna roll o'er evah-one!!

With the tu secret QB and the ND players getting in trouble for off the field shenanigans, tu should win that game.

Only one starter for ND was involved, the rest are bench warmers or were injured and not expected to play for a month or two.

Swoopes is a physical specimen. On paper he looks like he would be the second coming of Vince Young. In reality he has a mental disconnect from snap to executing the play. I used to think it was an offensive system problem. And to be fair, Swoopes has had 4 different OCs since he's been there. Going from a Harsin/Applewhite to a Watson (West Coast), then Norvell and now Gilbert/Briles' style, one would think something would work for him.

Adding to Swoopes problems is an unorganized mess at O-line whether from critical injuries or jumbled blocking schemes. Changing offensive systems changes the blocking schemes. Once again they have lost their center to injury. Shackelford might be back for the ND game, but he won't have been practicing with the line all of the time before the game.

When it came out that Gilbert really doesn't have a playbook and doesn't script series, it didn't bode well for Swoopes. Being able to read defenses and react accordingly isn't in his wheelhouse. The fact that he is even in the talk for being named the starter tells me they have no better options. The Swoopes/Heard tandem QB system worked even more poorly than our Kyle/Kyler exercise in schizophrenia last year.

Trotting out a true freshman in Buechele but then going to Swoopes too will not be pretty. If Swoopes is only on the field for the so-called "18 wheeler" package, the defense will know just what to do to stop him. And it ain't that hard to do.

Sounds like Chollie needs to trap door a butt load of players - you know, to clean up Macks mess and coach up his own recruits.

If their o line is struggling to pass protect against the big poonah and omenihu I think Shane will be running for his life a lot. Gilbert will roll him out and he will make a few big plays chunking it deep but that o line could get him hit hard too. Not good for the young man.

After four years of pummeling, both on the field (thanks to his OL) and in the media (thanks Coach!), he's got David Carr syndrome, and he's got it bad. I seriously doubt he can recover at this point. Hell, in five years, if he's at a party and somebody walks into the room too quickly, he's going to involuntarily assume that curled up "I'm about to be sacked damage minimization and football protection" position.

Unfortunately this isn't the result of a bad oline. Swooped said early in his career that he is afraid to get hit.

In a sense, I understand the no playbook mindset a la Bob Stitt's offense. All reads to determine where the weak point in the defense is located. But....that takes a QB who knows the individual defensive players on the two deep and who can react quickly to substitutions and motion.

That's a ton of film to review every week, especially for a slow learner or someone with lagging reaction times.

HUNH offense with Swoopes? Fuhgedaboutit.

The strategy is obvious and so are it's origins. It is however, foolishly optimistic to believe merely anyone can execute it.

Good thing for Joe Tessitore, Todd Blackledge, and Holly Rowe that this is the first game of the season. Gives them plenty of time to research and brush up on their tu talking points. Sounds like this game will get out of hand pretty quick.

It might not be solely on his OL, but there's no way that reliving the German Blitzkrieg every Saturday hasn't further harmed his pocket presence.
