Live programming is how cable networks are going to survive, especially when it comes to sports. I loved the All-Access show, but cutting it to 30 minutes was the beginning of the end.
I wonder how different things would be for LHN if the network was allowed to show live high school football games in the state of Texas on Thursday and Friday nights. Not saying that would have saved it, but the more relevant live programming they could add the better off they'd be.

That was a business mistake. ESPN could not, rightfully, believe tu sports in general was about to take such a nose dive. Clearly they completely over-estimated their value. But don't confuse that with contract and exit terms. Two very different things.
The only business mistake ESPN made with the LHN was underestimating the backlash from the Big XII and the NCAA and how many eyeballs they would lose as a result.
Yes that was a decisive win for Texas A&M and the rest of the schools in the region of Texas, OK, Arky and Louisiana.

It must be remembered that our first win wasn't going to the SEC it was driving the NCAA to react within a week and negating all high school sports on conference/school owned networks.

If you were Dodds how many of you would have actually thought...gee i bet if we get our own network we can show conference games and high school sporting events without the other schools objecting?

I'd wager very few of you would be that stupid and arrogant.

Translated that says "I wonder how the LHN would have been if we could have cheated?"

Well, no s*** Sherlock. It also would have been a recruiting violation during every broadcast. Dodds set it up to be an unfair advantage and one that would get the horns under constant NCAA scrutiny. He thought he was untouchable by the NCAA. And he was right, but they didn't give him the chance to cheat quite that blatantly.

I heard talks are underway to merge LHN with the History Channel. Probably H2, actually.

Dumb legal question here but "Why are sections of the LHN contract allowed to be redacted?" I don't get why those sections are not treated the same as the rest of the document in a FOI request.

Bellmont needs to be planning for a short stint as an independent. This situation is so messy...not sure the horns could make the conference change in one step (like A&M did).

Objective #1 should be to get out of the Big 12 by whatever means necessary. Then hang on for 1, 2, or 3 years as an Indy and then move to a new conference. No doubt scheduling will be a major pain across the board, but t.u. may just have to endure it for a short while

Good question and I have no idea what the rationale was for redacting those sections. Bonfire? Ideas?

Good Lord, the sphincters on the Brazos must be really frickin' tight right now.

At least while Briles was there they could make an argument to get taken with the Sips, but now?

There are going to be some seriously ugly legal battles involving some small schools with deep pockets.

Perfect timing then. Baylor gonna be broke for the forseeable future. And Starr is gone. They'll roll over if the Big XII implodes in the next year or so.

I've long wondered that. The only thing I can think of is if it pertains to Disney financial info that may be exempted from FOIA requests? But that's just a guess. Maybe someone hasn't tried hard enough.

If we have access to head coach contracts, certainly we have acces to this where no individuals are named.

Can't wait to see if they default on their stadium bonds. Remember, conf usa tv payout is 200k per school per year.

That's gonna take a lot of monster truck rallies, Chris Tomlin concerts, and such to make up the difference!

So I am an Aggie ('95), my wife is an Aggie ('92), and of my three children, two are Aggies, 16' and 18' respectively. My third decided to go to Baylor. While at student orientation this week, we ate in the Baylor cafeteria. The funny thing is that the TV was tuned to the LHN, I had to laugh. I'm not sure it was intentional or not, but truly comical. I wondered if there is a clause for all B12 teams to show it on their TVs...

The Big 12 needs another "big time" team. Texas has to get back or Kansas needs to get their **** together. Not enough competition. BYU is the only remote possibility I see. OR merge with the Big 10 and create a West and East division megaconference

Excellent point, as usual.

Beebe did sign off on the LHN contract, on behalf of the Big XII.

Many viewed that as a conflict of interest, if you catch my drift.

No. There is no sports news on the LHN. ESPN channels had the Baylor news on the crawls and kept mentioning the scandal. My guess.

My recollection was that that decision was made without any NCAA ruling. ESPN and Texas caved to try to appease conference members( some who have left anyways) High school games should be a part of the programming. Also, what about showing live events from other institutions in the UT system. Like UT San Antonio

whole LHN deal was going down, they thought they were going to be able to show high school games. After the deal had been done, other schools had to throw a damn hissy fit over the whole thing. Then LHN was stripped of some of its prime programming that it thought it would have. I can almost guarantee that if LHN could show high school games, they would be in the black now.

Exactly! Other people talk about how it is a failure and how it looks bad on UT. However, I don't see that at all.
First of all, it actually is a very good product, but ESPN just wanted people to pay a premium for it so that put the network behind when the first few years of the network were only seen by a few people. Now that the network is more widespread, they are making money, however it is just not quick enough for the likes of ESPN investors.
Second, even if it was as bad as people like to say it is, Texas STILL makes $15 million per year on the deal, no matter what! Any school that has a brain would salivate at a guaranteed $15 million every year for 3rd tier rights! Trust me, if the roles were reversed and A&M had its own network, they would like it VERY much!

So ESPN just shutdown the shows that people tuned in to watch that weren't live events. Sounds like ESPN is doing a slow bleed to the death with the LHN. What happens to Jane Slater does she go back the local news and do traffic reports last time I saw her she looked like a woman that has a drinking problem has she been hanging around Augie?

Read a post on the Shag awhile back regarding conference realignment: "Dodds was playing chess while everyone else was playing checkers. Problem was, it was a checkers tournament."

Flat out lie. Dodds was pimping the illegal recruiting aspect of using the high school games solely for recruiting purposes. At the same the ESPN employee was going on the radio and saying the same thing.

Dismantling takes a bit of time. Bristol sent their A team of production staff to Austin in 2011. That staff has slowly but inexorably dwindled down to a few people who obviously have little future with ESPN, but are being parked there for the time being.

They thought Fozzy On Safari would be beloved.

According to Randolph dukes whackadoodle accounting methods the garage sale of the Lhn studio furnishings and equipment should put the network in the black this year.
