Oregon supplants tu as the college revenue king

AUSTIN Texas' five-year reign as the money-making king of college athletics is over.
Thanks to a huge donation from Nike founder Phil Knight, Oregon collected a record $196 million in sports revenue in 2013-'14, knocking the Longhorns from their perch atop USA Today's annual list of the nation's richest public-school athletic programs.

These are the kind of threads that I don't understand. Texas still brought in more than $40 million more last year then we did. So it's hard to make fun of them regarding money. Hopefully the new stadium will allow us to close the gap.

They also run the most expensive athletic department. With the money Dodds was bringing in they should have close to $100,000,000 in reserves*, but they don't. Can't even pay for a $15,000,000 tennis facility without poor-mouthing to donors.

Knight giving a huge donation to Oregon...again, shouldn't really be factored into revenue the way it is in that article.

It won't be the stadium, it will be the SEC money. We'll be close in gross revenue in five years. Just hope we don't repeat their mistake in expenses, feeling there is no end in sight.

* Ten million per year surplus over ten years of his 30+ year tenure, even with capital improvements being paid for by donations, completely feasible for the highest grossing revenue program.

So your school made $40M more than A&M in revenue. It lost money and A&M turned a $24M profit.

Texas Tech, who hasn't won a single game in any sport this school year, had a larger profit margin than texas.

Making money used to mean more in revenue than expenses. Now it just means a bigger gross revenue number, according to the horns.

There are few Big XII teams ahead of the horns in profits, even with their own network.

All that money, yet they got crushed by BYU, Baylor, Tcu, Kstate, and Arkansas. Also: no matter how much money the sips get from donors, the 10-team big12 is always going to be an awful conference for the sip season ticket holders. No conference championship game, small tv audiences, small stadiums, boring games, bad road trips, and the weakest overall talent level according to the NFL. The best players in the USA choose to play in the SEC, ACC, Pac12, and B1G.

My school is A&M. PetE Degree 1982. I use my real name so it's easy to verify me.

Athletics is about winning, not profitability. Making fun of tu for another losing season is good bull. But making fun of them about how much money they brought in is dumb. At least until we bring in more than them.

Well make sure you are here Friday after the SEC announces the financial numbers because the meltdown should be epic. The renegotiated contract that kicked in for 2014 with the addition of A&M and Mizzou should pay out right around $30 million that is just the CBS/ESPN and doesn't include the SECN, Bowl & NCAA tournament money. I would be surprised if tu isn't already on the phone with ESPN trying to rework the LHN deal.

Sip Athletics is like a high maintenance wife that was hot in her youth and accustomed to a wealthy lifestyle, but is now an old hag that is no longer worth the expense and a beech to boot.

Get her a gin and tonic and a Virginia slim and put her in the corner. No one cares to talk to her anyway.

The morning newspaper report on the BDF meetings yesterday said that Patterson reiterated to his BDF brethren that he feels that the sips are an "international brand" and are going to pursue developing in that way.

The sips are going to end up like the Cowboys.... both international brands that haven't won sh*t in years.

Enron had a ton of revenue and we see where that got them. If the sips can't widen their profit margin, they can't afford new facilities, coaches, etc....

At end of the day, sips made $7M and we made $24M. Which one would you rather have??? Which amount helps the school more?

Patterson is a pro-sports guy, period. His mindset is promoting a brand with a product. The horns are just "New Coke" for which he wants to establish new markets-i.e. "consumers."

To a large degree, Larry Scott's background in professional tennis gives him the same mindset, but then he is selling a conference, not just one institution.

My thing about the money is that they hired Strong at over $5 mil./yr. Money doesn't guarantee you wins, it guarantees you'll drive a hard bargain when competing for coaches (among other things). So, if they want to replace Strong in 3 years, they'll be able to afford his buyout, the next guy's buyout at the school they're asking him to leave, and pay him a ****load of cash per year. Over time, that's tough to beat.

Also, dubious making distinctions about "profit margin" without knowing what each school's money is and isn't being spent on. Hell, on paper a school might be in the red for several years after taking in a bunch of cash like we did last year, if they're spending money on things like a new stadium, for instance. We have to look over time to get an accurate picture.

We'll know tomorrow when the SEC and Big XII distributions are announced.

Every P5 conference will see an increase due to the restructured bowl pay-outs and guaranteed spots in the NYD6 bowls.

The SEC will not only have the new CBS contract that kicked in for 2014, but the first five months of the SECN on top of that.

I hope you are right. One of the worst contracts in college sports is the SEC contract with CBS. CBS is paying waaaaaaaaay way way way the f--k below market.

I'm hopeful that when the numbers get reported for this year (July 1, 2014 thru June 30, 2015) that we will show another good jump in revenues due to more conference money, more ticket money (our average attendance went up about 20,000 from 2014) and from donations. I'm not sure how capital campaign contributions get reported, but the annual donations should rise significantly with the new stadium because it costs a lot more to sit on the west side.

The CBS deal is all about branding for the conference, it seems. That is the only way to explain away the $ figure from what I can gather.

The SEC gave up some money to CBS to make a ****-ton of money on the SECN. It's called negotiating. Without CBS's concessions about exclusivity on their broadcast window, the SECN would be stuck with the amount of content that they could air in a given weekend. It will all be water under the bridge when the checks clear.
JeffHamilton82
How long do you want to ignore this user?
To be clear, I'm talking about the prior contract with CBS, that I believe was signed around 2008. It runs to around 2024 I think. And yes, it was renegotiated somewhat a couple of years ago and yes CBS did give up their 2:30 exclusive window time. The contract is arguable between $100-300 million A YEAR below market. The SEC failed to recognize in 2008 how much value their was in college football.

Anyway, this CBS stuff is all for a different thread. I was just replying to MSU since he said their would be announcement tomorrow. Hopefully A&M's revenues will surpass tu's in the future.

That's crazy money. I don't think it's going to be that high. The conference doled out $20.9MM last year.
Even if the SECN distribution is $5MM/school, you have to have another $57MM in revenue increase to make up that difference. Plus, the renegotiated CBS contract was done prior to the 2014 season, so that jump has already been accounted for. I'm thinking around $27MM/school is what the final number will be.

The amount that comes out Friday is going to be a game changer; not because of the amount, but because of the upside of that revenue stream. The fact that the SECN wasn't even supposed to make a profit in its first year, and now is likely to be worth around $5MM/school in year one is going to raise some eyebrows. Of course, the sips will ignore it, and call it redneck accounting, but deep down, the ones that can rub two brain cells together will know they are in a heap of trouble going forward.
