Lubbock or Bust!

It's never too early in the week to prepare for a college football game.

I will be making my every thirty year trek to Jones SBC this weekend although I get to Lubbock about twice a year on business. Always being there for lunch, I am not real familiar with the better places at night. I will be at River Smith's for lunch Friday, but Friday night I have to feed 9 hungry Aggies and Raiders. I suppose some in Lubbock think of Rip Griffin's Truck Stop as a high class joint, but for this group I need something a bit nicer. Is Orlandos is still open there by the Civic Center? Anything new at the Depot I should know about? Do I need to go out to the South Loop and Slide road area for a decent meal? I try to avoid the chains to support the locals.

Thanks guys!

I love busts, though I've been known as a leg man, too.

mike,

The Orlandos on 24th and Avenue Q is still open. In fact, they opened another one on the South Loop 289 and Indiana (if you are in that area).

A place I recommend on Mexican food is Taco Village on 1st Street and Ave Q. Bad part of town, ugly atmosphere, but muy bueno food. I met Bill Cosby there once when he was in town (true story!).

If you want to meet Mike Leach, he'll be at the Fox and the Hound on 82nd between Indiana and Quaker Avenues

You left the last few words off I see.

Do the folks at Orlandos also own Caprock on Indiana? That is across the street from my nephew's house.

My choices...

1. Harrigan's (yes, it is sort of a chain, but really they only have 5 total restaurnts).

2. Cagles (WAY out west on 4th st.)

3. Abuelo's (chain, yes, but still damn good)

4. 50 yard line

5. County Line (another chain, but see #1)

mike,
Yes, Caprock Cafe on 34th and Indiana is owned by the Orlando guys. And it is good food, too!

B.J., I like Taco Village, so sue me! It's more authentic than Abuelos and Don Pablos. Its for Mexican food conniseurs (and I know I misspelled, so sue me).

You guys have to stop trying to foist Mexican food on me - I live in Mexico almost.

Looks like quite a road trip to get out to Cagles. Is that out by the winery?

Any steakhouse closer in that is any good?

Stick with the 50 Yard Line for steaks. It's out on South Loop 289. I miss River Smith's. We used to go there all the time growing up out on the Llano Estacado.

50 Yard Line is good for Steaks. Might even see the General

Harrigans = Prime Rib

It is what they are known for. I'm sure their steaks are good, too, but I have always ordered the Prime Rib.

Mikey - Take a bottle of peanut butter and carry bottled water. You're going to Lubbock - not Manhattan.

This place is so damn good. I suppose it sucks if you're favorite restaurant is Don Pablo's but it's very authentic and very good. Their famous for their chile rellenos, people come from New Mexico to get them, they're muy bueno.

Also Cagles (best steaks ever), Spanky's (Lubbock stalwart, burgers), Stella's (expensive, good Italian)

Off topic:
Just so we are not all confused, West Texas Mexican Food is not the same as the Tex Mex food so poplular in the rest of Texas. New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and California all have California style Mexican foods, but they are not Tex Mex. With that being said, we can argue about the merits of each, but each is different and each is decidely good in it's own right. I love them all.

Back to the subject at hand: There looks to be a dirth of good steakhouses there in Lubbock. I may have to import my steaks this weekend. River Smith moved from it's start on 4th to a new building on Ave. Q. a few eyars ago. He did keep the food the same and the price the same. I have not been there for six months and I hope it is still there.

Prime rib is a example of how many folks ruin a good piece of meat. They soak them in tendrizers and bake them to death. Now if you take a 1 1/2" rib chop and grill that sucker, yummmm.

California Mexican Sucks.

I am craving Tex-Mex. Even the On the Borders out here blow.

Sadly, Legs, Breasts and More didn't last very long, they've already shut down.

50 yard line is very good. I've eaten here twice with my fiancee's family before games. Both times the referees for the day's game sat at the table next to us. It took some serious self control to keep my mouth shut....

Raider 1 - At least we will have Big XII officials at the game there. When they bring in zebras from the Big East or somewhere that they have different rules, it is hard to adjust. I just might have go to the Fifty Yard Line to bask in the glory of tt football. It appears that is the place to be seen in maroon clothes. I'm sure all are friendly there I will be treated well.

Mikey - My cousin who is a prof at TT took me to 50 Yd Line to get the best steak in Lubbock, and I have to admit, it was a half-step above Bonanza.

Go to Morton's or Ruth's Chris in San Antonio, buy the steaks you want, pack them in ice in a cooler, and take them to Lubbock if you have to go there.
