Who has the best barbecue in Texas?
Kreuz Market in Lockhart
Smitty's Market in Lockhart
City Market in Luling
Cooper's Pit Bar-B-Q in Mason
Louie Mueller Barbecue in Taylor
That is who they have as the best 5 (in no particular order). I have been to the two in Lockhart and Luling they are awesome, and within about 10 miles of each other. Often times I go to Austin through the Luling/Lockhart/Gonzalez area by taking 1-10 to 183 just to stop and eat lunch. If you are in Houston the son of the folks who own City Market in Luling opened up the Luling City Market in Houston some 20 years ago, it is almost as good. I haven't bought the magazine yet but last time they did it they had Goode Co in the top 50 (didn't number but the top 5). My assesment of some of the joints I have been to that you all have mentioned:
Rudy's the one on 183N is best and very good to stop in on, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get there.
Salt Lick - the main reason I go there is for the BYOB and All You Can Eat, but the BBQ is very good as well.
County Line - Last time I went there I was very dissapointed, went to the one in San Antonio. Last time I went to one of the ones in Austin I remember having a good meal not a great meal. I think you have to get the family style meal.
Mikeska's - I don't care for at all (been to two different ones neither was that good)
Goode Co - The original on Kirby in Houston is about 2 miles from my house thus I frequent this one alot
Luling in Houston - Best 100% beef sausage in the world. Everything is excellent, but I don't go in there without getting a link. I like the sauce as mentioned above, but it is vinegar based and many don't like it. I actually didn't start liking their sauce until about a year ago, before that I ate there w/o any sauce and still thought it was my favorite.
Iron Works in Austin is good, doesn't fit my taste but see where it could meet others.
Stubbs in Austin is pretty good, I can see why others wouldn't like it, but I like the seasonings he uses (and even have bought them to use at home on occassion)
My Back Yard - My brisket is good but inconsistent, sometimes it comes out to fatty and sometime it is too dry. The Turkey is excellent, and if on a good day, we might have some for you to take home. Off the menu we offer a side of Salmon that is awesome an have been known to cook on order for our guest to take home with them. Ribs we have a lot of trouble with and are taking suggestions on how to improve...we got the seasoning down right, but the type and size of ribs as well as length of cooking time is off.
That is my assesment, I am going to go buy the magazine tonight and guard it with my life and use it as a checklist.
