Think about it before you sign.

Over twenty years ago, before I could recognize the propensity of anyone's mortality, one of my Professors at TTech asked me to be the executor of his estate and medical power of attorney. I gave it no thought, just did it.
He broke a hip last week and I've been there until this week. It looked hopeful.

Today I leave for Lubbock to remove him from the respirator. the Dr's assure me that to not do so only prolongs his agony with no hope. But, He is still aware and will recognize me.

Although it is the right thing and Gods will, nothing has ever shaken me like having to make this decision-nothing.

Think long and hard before you sign a MPOA. It is far more important than it will seem at the time.

It is hard to express how difficult this is but impossible to express how glad and blessed I feel that it is a friend rather than an attorney or acquaintance doing this.

Although he is a "tard" prof and a sip to boot; he (and I) could use your prayers.

thoughts and prayers, raider.

you're not making the decision to end his life. you're making the decision to stop his pain. this is the decision he trusted you with long ago and still does since he never revoked it or had anyone else sign it.

it carries with it a great responsibility, but it is one he knew you could perform if needed.

tell him to go be with God and that you will see him again.

WOW! That was the toughest 24 hours of my life.

Thank you all for your prayers.

I got to the hospital at 10 am Sunday, he was in a lot of discomfort but recognized me. Became agitated when I moved away from the bed. I met with the Doctors, he had lost circulation to his leg, and it had to be removed or do this. There were more problems-a lot more. I wasn't going to have him chopped up, nor would he, it was a scene out of "Lonesome Dove".

We removed the respirator at 2 PM. He finally passed at 7:30 the next morning. His one other surviving friend and I were there every minute of 17 1/2 hours of pure hell.

I don't want to turn this into a political or religious thing but we need to think about giving Doctors more options in cases like this. As a society we take child killers and make their death as quick and painless as possible. As we should.

But here is a guy who did everything right. Fought wars, taught students and stuck with his wife when she became ill and could not have children.

And he has to endure this. I simply do not understand.

I pray no one here ever has to go through this but, if you do, here is something to think about. At 7 am his vitals were still strong; frustrated, I went to the nurses and asked if there was not something else we could do.

The nurses said "nothing that does not involve manslaughter". I said I was going to get a donut and some coffee. As I walked out a nurse caught me and told me to go talk to him, tell him to let go, every thing would be ok and it was time to go home. So I did.

He passed before the elevator got to the cafeteria. I don't know.

Thanks again. I'm very glad I signed the MPOA. I'm glad I was there.

Rest in Peace, Doc

I have a living will, I hightly advise them.

I'm so glad he had you and his friend, with his wife gone and no other family, I know that comforted him greatly.

I thought they would allow morphine in that situation, but I guess not. That doesn't make sense to me, but nonetheless, I'm glad you were there with him and hope you will be okay after this as well.

We can all only hope we are with someone as caring when we pass...

Raider - I can't imagine having to go through something like that, but it sounds awful. You're a tough dude to be able to do that, but also a damn good friend. The world needs more people like you.

Thanks, I'm fine
In fact, I know he's proud of me right now. Not always evident in class those many years ago.

As far as not being in the room that second-irrelevant to me, I would not have wanted to him to wait for me to get coffee.

To make this rivalries related: He invested very well-soon I will have to write a very large check to Texas University (got that right don't I?)

PS-although I'm too old for this and probably the worst poster on here, I do enjoy the diatrabe.

I want to go back to being just one of the kids on the short bus next week. OK?

I'm sorry for your loss this week. It sounds like he could have been made more comfortable and that is a shame.
