i actually don't mind some of them coming over for work. lord knows welfare recipients won't do it and some jobs need to get done. of course with the drug trafficking into the US it's hard to determine who are the ones coming over here for an honest day's pay

I'm okay with a guest worker program, but not until the framework is in place to actually deal with new and existing illegals, hard. Like BI f'in hard.

I fully believe that any change in immigration law or enforcement implemented by government will result in a worse situation than we have now. I do not believe in a significant connection between drugs and immigration. As long as Americans continue to want illegal drugs, they will get illegal drugs. I didn't agree with William F. Buckley for years about legalizing recreational drugs, but those years of experience have changed my mind somewhat. I'd at least let the grassheads have their toke. Not because I think it's good for you, but because of the cost, in money and manpower, involved.

They are tied together in the sense that it is border security, though they are different because of the motive. Both are problems that can be handled by the same and different laws depending on what you are addressing.

I have tried to re-think the drug war thing too. But, I still can't figure out why foreign drug cartels would give a crap about a legalization measure. Why would they abandon a perfectly working black market system just to put themselves under the harassment of some government bureaucracy?

I also believe that there is a net negative cultural effect of legalizing the product, though I know the potheads out there will point to other lax countries and say there isn't a problem there. I just look at Americans and their tendencies to binge on all sorts of things and feel like this wouldn't turn out well. I might be convinced that lowering the penalties for bottom end users might be tolerable, but make it tougher on the dealers.

I think my favorite comment about this whole situation was when Keith Olbermann said that Arizona has the audacity to make being an illegal immigrant...illegal

Theres other ways to get rid of illegal immigrants. Hell, put such a high fine on businesses found guilty of using illegal immigrants that it stop. Make it a felony. Whatever. If they really wanted to get rid of it, there are ways without messing with the 4th Amendment.

As far a pot goes, the penalties for users are way too high. Weed isnt crack and theres nothing wrong with using it safely. The govt. trusts us to drink, lets us make our own decisions on the health issues of smoking tobacco, I dont see why pot is any different.

Great idea so long as the employer who imports the guest worker and reaps the economic benefits also shoulders the costs to society. They should be required to post a cash "repatriation bond", furnish comprehensive medical insurance for the worker (and the worker's family if brought here), pay the worker a living wage based on current objective federal standards, etc. Taxpayers should no longer be forced to subsidize the workforces of Bo Pilgrim, Perry Homes and other parasitic employers. The failed 2007 bill was crafted to maintain the status quo and encourage guest worker importation putting the U.S. on the fast track to a third-world economy.

Sounds like this new legislation is working according to plan. Can't wait for Texas to come through!

I haven't done much of either since college but; a country where it's fine to slam down a couple of tequila's and drive but illegal to sit on your own porch and smoke a joint doesn't seem to have a solid grip on either situation.

So you are saying that a highly government regulated drug trade would be run so well and efficiently that drugs would become dirt cheap and crack rocks could be bought in gumball machines for a nickel a hit?

You know I could almost be convinced that the government would try to distribute crack in gumball machines. There isn't much that the big government types likes more than large SOMA numbed voting constituencies.
