With transport costs, you need to be really sure of the value of everything you are moving. Don't want to go across the country and find out that half the stuff you didn't need or is worth less than the cost to move it.

When I moved across the country I got rid of almost everything and started over. I only kept a few irreplaceable things that would fit in a U-Haul and everything else was either sold or given away. No regrets whatsoever!

Definitely evaluate… I've moved cross country a couple times and abroad once. If you are younger, chances are hiring movers cross country is worth as much if not more than most of your stuff. As you get older though, that completely changes.

There are no real 'cross country moving' companies in the sense that they handle your stuff end to end. Most of them sub out packing and loading, storage/truck hire and unpacking separately so it's a bit of a crapshoot to be honest. Key things will be price and and insurance costs/coverages… make sure that's well in order then the rest is pretty much a commoditized service.

Only other thing I'll say is even if professional packers and movers handle everything in long moves, some of your furniture will get damaged and some of your stuff will break. It's just the nature of it. Make sure your expensive stuff that can break is heavily documented.

You'll inevitably lose some glasses and plates and bowls and other glass stuff so expect to replace some of that.
