Now that software engineers like myself (or any virtual job) can work from anywhere, and Starlink will enable us to have high speed low latency internet literally anywhere, where is the absolute best spot in Texas to live? Hill country? The coast? Southeast Hearne?

What is the most hidden of hidden gems? THE place you'd live if it weren't so remote or under-infrastructured?

What is idyllic? Getting a hamburger after 10? Close to music? Hunting and fishing? Solitude?

Who knows? Not me.

God's country

7 acres next door to me is for sale. I mean they are asking a ton for completely undeveloped land north of Bryan....

Lots of nice, small towns in beautiful East TX. Depends on what's important to you.

In 2016 I worked on the NWCA and went to every corner of the state and in between.

The best place imho was Ft. Davis. It reminds me of Durango Colorado, or Glenwood Springs a bit. Kindof western,, but set in the mountains. Beautiful views of the night sky, nearby airport, small population, beautiful mountains, and an observatory you can visit. At the right time of year/month/night whatever you can see the American Flag on the moon from their telescope.

If you like the woods, you could try Jefferson, Texas so long as you don't mind living behind the "pine curtain". Lots of acreage pine forest with minimal undergrowth.

What this guy said. Anywhere around Ft. Davis or Alpine would be great for me.

Love Ft. Davis, but I feel like it probably wouldnt be ideal for someone who is WFH unless things have drastically changed in the past few years in the way of internet options and cell phone service

I grew up in far west TX and lived for a time in Alpine, Ft Davis, and Marfa. I miss living out there. It's a shame what's happened to Marfa because it was a great place (and still is outside of the overpriced real estate). I don't think I ever felt more at home in a town. Alpine is nice too and I could definitely live there again. Ft Davis is...I don't know how to describe it. The setting is beautiful, but it wouldn't be in my top 10 choices of small towns to live in.

Two towns out there that I think are underrated are Marathon and Van Horn. Marathon is probably the place I would live now if I could. Van Horn isn't going to win any awards for beauty but the people make it such a great small town. I-10 running smack through town is a big negative though.

I've often thought about this as I can already live anywhere with my job.

Caddo Lake
Canyon Lake or on the river
Fredericksburg (at least 5-10 miles outside of town)

If not Texas, I think Knoxville or NorthEast Tennessee in the mountains.

East TN in general is overlooked but has beautiful scenery, great outdoor activities, four seasons, etc.

Avoids some of the negatives that came with coal mining further to the north in KY and WV but has also avoided the price inflation that western NC has seen.

I had never considered Tennessee, but went and looked based on your comment. Found some really affordable pieces of property that are just beautiful.

My company is located in Johnson City, TN and I love flying in there. If I move one position up, I may have to move closer to that area. The lakes there are phenomenal and as you saw, pricing is very reasonable.

Edit to add- We have about 500 employees and 95% of them are super nice and very down to earth. I think a Texan would get along there just fine.

Good point. I have no idea what the network situation is up there in 2020. It wasn't great when I was up there in 16.

For the past year I've been in Ogden Utah. Trail running and climbing in the spring/summer and skiing in the winter have been amazing. I too work remotely/semi-retired etc.

I used to cover Ogden in a previous role at work. I loved my trips out there.
