My daughter moved into a flea-infested apartment three weeks ago. The lease has a clause about accepting the unit "as is" but she did not realize they were there until a couple days after. She has bites all over her legs. She has no pets, but it looks like the previous tenant did. The screen door is shredded at the bottom. There are chewed baseboards. This is NOT a low-rent apartment. How can I best get the owners attention.

Did she do a walk through? All of those items should have be noted prior to signing a lease.

Obligatory "Why do fleas need legal advise?" post.

In the meantime she should go to the store and spend $6 on a couple bug bombs. They work great on fleas.

Excuse me, but I haven't seen many high-end apartments with screen doors. Where is this luxury complex?

Step 1)Bug bomb
Step 2) vacuum

Wait a week

Step 3) bug bomb
Step 4) vacuum

Empty vacuum bag immediately after each time. Into an outside trash container.

If needed, and if you want to be sure, repeat the process in another week.

There is also powder you can pour across the floor. If its as bad as I had it in an apartment, it won't be a quick process. It'll take weeks. I bombed the ever living sh** out of my apartment while simultaneously powderin the carpet. It was a knock down drag out brawl. But I finally won. A rewarding victory.

There are going to be fleas for 6-8 weeks from when the pets left no matter what she does short of burning the place to the ground. Her best bet would be to bring in a normal host (dog or cat) on a flea adulticide product. The fleas only bite us if they have no other option and are starving.

Damn I guess I am waaay too nice of a landlord. I would have exterminator out there the next day. I think I would make a bigger stink to landord.

If it's a standard TAA lease then the requirement is usually that any place previously with pets be professionally flea treated prior to new move in.

Hope it's not bed bugs. That is a huge expense.

Same issue with my first apartment, and same issue with scumbag LL. Go get the flea version of Raid, it comes in a purple can and I found it in either CVS or Walgreens, worked like a charm and only needed 1 application. Doesn't need you to leave the home or anything like that, way less invasive and far more effective, all fleas were dead in like 20 minutes.

I would be more verbal with the landlord...she obviously didn't bring them in. Keep track of all expenses to get rid of the fleas.

We've had success with a flea spray for furniture/carpet...then vacuum, vacuum, and vacuum some more. Wash all bedding and pillows in HOT water. Also, the bug bombs are pretty good too. Good luck...sounds like a craptastic landlord.
