The Battle for Atlantis begins today. Our ladies are hopefully enjoying themselves in the beautiful island of the Bahamas. While island life may be nice and breezy, the opposite of that represents our basketball team. Our ladies are 3-2 coming into Atlantis and look to change that narrative in the Bahamas. The rest of the field aside from us and Nova are, North Carolina, Ball State, Baylor, Columbia, Indiana, and Southern Miss.
This tournament is bracket style. Our first matchup is against Nova, the remaining side on our bracket is North Carolina and Ball State. Winners play each other next round in the semi's and losers play to either get the 5th place game or the 7th place game. UNC is really good and should be the winner of that matchup. The games will only be streamed on Flo Sports, except for the championship. Which is a real bummer, so I'll only be able to watch the box score.
Our first matchup on paper should be an even matchup. Villanova hasn't really played the toughest schedule, but a fair schedule. They have wins over Wake Forest, Columbia, and Penn, with a loss to Princeton. All respectable teams. Their wins are definitely better than ours.
However, we have a HUGE size advantage. They don't have anyone 6'0 tall in their starting lineup or immediate depth. They play small ball the entire game. So our entire game plan should be to play inside out. That's when we're at our most effective anyways. We just can't get into foul trouble playing girls much smaller than us. Their field goal shooting numbers are similar to us, but they shoot the 3 a bit better and the free throw line significantly better.
They use a tight lineup and will hardly substitute, especially their top girls. Leading them in scoring is their point guard #17 Jasmine Bascoe who averages 17.0 points a game and guard #34 Maddie Webber who averages 13.3. They do have 4 other girls an average 8 points. So they are versatile scoring, with 4 of those girls shooting over .300 from three.
However, size should be the difference here. If we use it to our advantage, pass the ball efficiently inside, and slow the game down we should win. Rebounding should favor us as well. We really need this win to uplift our slow start to the season. It'll be a neutral site win if we can pull it off. We can't fall behind early, we need to establish ourselves inside the paint and bully them. We need to win. If we lose we play Ball State and that isn't a gimme either. If we win we play North Carolina… and we'll worry about that game later lol.
