I* would like to agree with you. However, she, Janiah Barker, cannot do any of what you suggested if she is not on the floor due to her continuing foul trouble habit from last year. As I said earlier, she plays like a bull in a China closet. Don't get me wrong, I want her to succeed SO much, but to do that she has to be able to be on the floor!taylorswift13_ said:
Barker can definitely stretch the floor and she had a great shot, but would love to see her more around the elbow than close to the 3 line! A two way game between her and Ware close to the point can be dangerous! Sort of like how Ciera Johnson and N'dea Jones would play! Really excited to see the offense we can put out each night! Yes, I agree 100%. If we did not have the transfers tonight, I wonder if we would even have won this game. I really like our returners from last year, but they can learn so much from the transfers Joni brought in this year. Kind of scary to think where we would be without them! They were very solid. All of the returners from last year looked lost in trying to find their role. Barker especially looks like she is search for who she is as a player. There are some really solid pieces there for a good run at SECs.

Let's just pray the OGs can add to what the transfers brought tonight. I definitely expected more from Barker. I was surprised by her lack of production offensively tonight, but it's just game one. Also - come on. You can't foul out against TAMU-CC. Reign that in. And she will.
My biggest disappointment, I think, is on the defensive end. The shooting within the first 10 seconds really leaves us exposed against better teams that can score quickly and in transition. The defense will have to get much better for us to approach 20 wins this season.

Luckily we don't have a very strong non conference, so that will give this team some time to mesh. Think it isn't going to be as seamless as I hoped for, which is totally ok. With everyone having a new role this year, there are going to be growing pains. Barker might be the most gifted, but the overall talent was raised resulting in her not having to be the entire offense
Ware was by far our best player tonight. She is really good and the best center we've had in many years. The other transfers were the highlight for sure. I went to watch Barker but she barely plays much because of foul trouble and when she was in the game I wasn't very impressed. She finally got going late in the game in transition but I'm not seeing where all the hype is about her game. Our 3 point shooting was abysmal so I hope that was just an off night as the shots were open and there for the making.
I'm concerned about team defense because the first 10 minutes was brutal to watch. I've seen Joni collect a bunch of talent, but can she coach them to win at a high level?

She played in 2020-2021 at auburn her freshman year, so I believe she'll have a covid year and get to play next year as well! Endiya Rogers should be done after this year. However Lauren Ware was a freshman during the covid year and has redshirted, so she might have this season and two more to go
Everyone freaking out over Janiah Barker is a little wild. She is so talented and going to be our best player many nights. She is just different and has such an amazing skill set. It's one game where she wasn't really needed. Last year if she was playing bad it was probably an automatic loss for us. Thankfully we don't need her to be an All American every night this year. But to freak out and act like she isn't good after one meaningless game against Corpus Christi is insane. She's going to be one of our leading scorers and top defenders!
This is true and I agree. I'm not freaking out, per se, I was just surprised. I know she will get it right. I think we don't realize that TAMU-CC is a good team. They have a European style bc of a lot of European players. They are a mature team and made the WNIT tournament last season.
I think these first few games are a good testament of what the makeup of the team will look like moving forward. Some players that got minutes probably won't get minutes in more competitive match ups. Everyone that played scored, with the exception of Kylie, I believe (but she only got 2 minutes).
From what we saw last night, our shooting and defense has to improve. Barker will be totally fine. When she is popping with the other 3-4 in the game we will win by 30-40 points.
