Unanswered questions linger in Aggies' future

March 26, 2013

Even when Texas A&M trailed Nebraska by 16 points in the second round of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament, the Reed Arena crowd was anxiously awaiting — perhaps even expecting — the Aggies to unleash a game-winning rally.

Freshman guard Jordan Jones almost provided it.

She hit two three-point field goals and turned a steal into a three-point play in a 90-second span to bring A&M within 64-57 with 2:44 remaining.

“Throughout the season, the team had relied on me for defense and me being a spark player,” said Jones, who was averaging a mere 2.8 points. “I just didn’t want to lose.”

Matt Sachs, TexAgs The soon-to-be sophomore class paints a bright picture for the Aggies' future, but will they realize that potential? {"Module":"photo","Alignment":"left","Size":"large","Caption":"The soon-to-be sophomore class paints a bright picture for the Aggies\u0027 future, but will they realize that potential?","MediaItemID":31176}
However, a potential defensive rebound deflected off Kelsey Bone’s hand and the Huskers capitalized with Hailie Sample’s rally-killing layup that boosted Nebraska to a 74-63 victory.

So, in a postgame press conference the Aggies, who were looking ahead to a Sweet Sixteen appearance in Norfolk, Va., could only refocus tear-reddened eyes and look ahead to the future.

And even then the picture is blurry.

“I think you saw the second coming of our next point guard in Jordan Jones and what she’s going to mean to this team,” A&M coach Gary Blair said.

Later he added: “Look at Jordan Jones shooting those threes. I don’t think she’s made three in a row in practice this year, but that’s how good that kid is going to be for us.”

But will Jones ever be good enough to calm teammates who often seem to panic in pressure situations? Can she bring discipline to a team that sometimes becomes disorganized? Will she be able to consistently get the ball inside to Bone?

And will Bone even be there to get that entry pass?

Bone, a 6-4 junior All-American candidate who averaged 16.7 points, has talked openly about the possibility of leaving college to enter the WNBA, a curious move considering that megabucks aren’t available in that league.

In the postgame press conference Bone again acknowledged that her future is uncertain.

“I’m going to sit down with Coach Blair and my family sometime this week,” she said. “This isn’t going to be a decision that I rush. I think a decision will be announced sometime next week.”

Whether Bone returns or not, the Aggies have some major issues to work out to become a championship-level team.

They were making good decisions. We were standing and watching. They were quicker to the ball. They wanted it more than we did. We’ve got to have a better basketball IQ. That’s coaching. That’s teaching. That’s my job. - A&M coach Gary Blair {"Module":"quote","Alignment":"right","Quote":"They were making good decisions. We were standing and watching. They were quicker to the ball. They wanted it more than we did. We’ve got to have a better basketball IQ. That’s coaching. That’s teaching. That’s my job.","Author":"A&M coach Gary Blair"}
“We’re close on offense, but we hodgepodge some things,” Blair said. “Sometimes we have people running the wrong way. We’ve got to be more disciplined. We need more cohesiveness on the offensive end, and we’ve got to learn to communicate and help better on defense.”

That was painfully obvious against Nebraska. Frequently, the Aggies seemed on the verge of a rally but too often took rushed or ill-advised shots.

And when crucial stops were needed on the defensive end, a Nebraska player inevitably popped open under the basket for easy layups.

“We were shooting early in the shot clock. They were shooting late,” Blair said. “They were making good decisions. We were standing and watching. They were quicker to the ball. They wanted it more than we did.

“We’ve got to have a better basketball IQ. That’s coaching. That’s teaching. That’s my job.”

No doubt Blair knows his job. He’s led nine teams to the Sweet Sixteen. Three reached the Elite Eight. He guided the Aggies to the national championship just two years ago.

Some thought the Aggies could make another long run through the NCAA tournament this year after they defeated No. 14 South Carolina, No. 9 Tennessee and No. 7 Kentucky in succession to win the SEC postseason tournament.

“I wish we could have pulled it out, but we didn’t,” Blair said “Same time next year, same place and we will be good again.”

But how good?

Could there be another long run through the women’s NCAA tournament in A&M’s future?

Perhaps. But with seniors Kristi Bellock and Adrienne Pratcher completing their eligibility and Bone’s uncertainty, the future is just so unclear.

Good write up. Blair's quote nails it, but he could not do or say anything during the game to turn the tide. Hard to remember a group of Anglo mid western type players (smart gym rat shooters)
who were as quick as the Nebraska players. The Huskers played very smart and really schooled the Ags in the fundamentals of basketball.

The rebounding difference was a real eye opener.
Nebraska is very well coached and deserved to win.

I like Coach Blair for many reasons, and not making excuses after this game and telling it like it is, is one of the reasons I like him.

Questions abound indeed! Other than some SEC tourney magic, we were routinely outcoached all season if you are honest about it. And don't forget the late season incident where Starkey got red faced yelling at Kelly Bond during a game with all the players on the bench obviously demoralized about the behavior. The brutal truth is, the best in game coach we had left to go coach in Mississippi. New hires have greatly underwhelmed, IMO.

Something was very wrong with this team's chemistry on and off all season - why does no one question a starter quiting the team early in the year? I mean, seriously does anyone really just think it is 100% Lexi's fault/problem?! I thought at the time and still do that there is something far bigger and unsavory behind that decision.

Listen folks I am a loyal fan, but things don't look all that great going forward. As posted last night in a thread the PC police have apparently taken down, with the exception of 2011, Blair's teams consistently exit the big dance at least one round too early. Go back and look at it, this cannot be disputed. I for one and sick and tired of watching him try to micromanage every offensive possession. For crying out loud, install it all week during practice and then sit down and shut up during the games other than time outs. Who would want to play point guard at A&M? This micromanagement is why Blair's teams don't fully develop to their potential IMO. Think about it, these kids are getting yelled at every second of every game. Take a risk, let your talent really flow? Forget about it.

Don't think it is appropriate to criticize players in this forum, but suffice it to say there was a real leadership void on this team and the supposed best player is enigmatic to say the least. We have a fine group of freshmen, one really talented soph (Scott) and a good post coming in. But no proven depth at point guard, and a paucity of pure shooters. Unless Blair & Co pull a rabbit out of the hat and sign one or two great JUCO players, we are not going to have a chance to be an elite team next year. Otehrwise, we will be pretty good yes, but not great even if KB returns. After a national championship one would have hoped for a far better trajectory.

Re Standish, I agree that there must be something more there, but kudos to her for not airing her laundry publicly.

Not sure what it is with this team, but a lot of focus was lacking- maybe starting with that first missed wide open layup.

All credit to Nebraska for executing beautifully on offense and defense. That being said, when a team built around hitting 3's is getting that done all game, that's really tough to beat. Ask Baylor from a few years ago what they thought about SD State.
Tap the brakes a little. Pretty sure the 08 team got reasonably far in the tourney, so not every year has ended in a flop. Besides, have you not seen how great the past few A&M point guards turned out to be? Franklin, Colson (for the most part), and Pratcher improved every season, and that's a testament to good coaching.

This is a young team, so a lack of chemistry is to be expected. You may be upset about an early exit, and it was a disappointing one, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. I really look forward to next year; I want to see the Courtney's grow in confidence and be more agressive.

Actually, she was quite proactive on social media in the days following her departure from the team. It led to some rather ugly rumors, and some threads that were deleted from TexAgs.

Because we lost does NOT mean we were out coached.

Because we lost to a lower seeded NCAA team does NOT mean we will not have an elite team next year.

I love Coach Blair and what he has done for A&M. We have several freshmen who played a lot of minutes this year. Between freshman and sophomore years is the time when basketball players generally show the greatest improvement. Next year will be better.

I think we are in great shape for an excellent 2013-14 SEC season. Thanks Coach Blair. Thanks staff. Thanks players. Work hard in the off-season.

+1 for MidTnAg. I'd add that just because you lose it doesn't mean there is a chemistry problem.

I stand by my comments. If you folks don't think we were out coached against Nebraska then you simply aren't facing reality. The defense was a problem this year, not the brand of Aggie basketball we all fell in love with when Gary and Vic came to town. There is obvious tension with the staff anda lack of team leadership and harmony. I know what I am talking about , our seats are baseline court side about 25 feet from the bench. Look, I am a loyal fan, and I have said in other recent posts I think Gary deserves our steadfast support. I am simply saying we have some issues to solve and some candid discussion in this forum might be illuminating. Sorry but I am just not a rose colored glasses guy.

I wonder if we are still adjusting to having a tall post player who can score. I loved the way Latoya Micheaux and Damitria Buchanan played but they were not scoring threats and their job was to screen, defend and rebound. Danielle Adams played the post but could also go outside and move around. Kelsey and Karla are good scorers, and can shoot free throws. On Monday, we had a lot of standing around on offense waiting for the ball to go inside. Give Nebraska credit. They really got back on defense to stop fast breaks and didn't turn the ball over, which were keys to our SEC Tournament wins.

dfleig,

I don't think anyone would say we weren't outcoached or outplayed against Nebraska; the scoreboard says so, and Blair's postgame comments were all about how magnificently the Huskers played. Do I think we are a more talented team than them in the abstract? Absolutely. But being the better team on paper only puts a finger on the scales of win probability. Nothing is guaranteed and that's why we play the games (hope that's enough cliches )

The difference is that you seem to be leaping from that to a lot of other inferences about the quality of the team, the chemistry, and the coaching that I think are ridiculous overreaction. Now, unless you are someone other than a random TexAgs poster like me, neither of us really know what goes on in practice or team meetings etc. We don't know how the girls are doing in their classes or how things in their personal lives are affecting them. However, most observers think this was one of the best jobs of coaching Gary Blair has done since he's been here, between the influx of new players, the seniors who didn't start in the past, and the turnover in the coaching staff... all of which are products of past success.

So going back to the statements you stand by.
quote:

I'm sure all of us wonder what happened. But as in any divorce, whose fault it is doesn't have to add up to 100% and it becomes irrelevant as you move on. What most of us saw was the chemistry improve after Lexi left. That doesn't mean anything bad about Lexi. But, for example, I think Pratcher thrived with the confidence that she would be the PG.

Players leave teams. If it becomes a pattern (like with our men, IMO), then the wondering may be more justified. But we just don't know what it means. Elena Delle Donne at Delaware and Samarie Walker at UK started at UConn. Does that mean Geno's teams have chemistry problems? LSU lost Krystal Forthan, one of the top recruits from a couple of years ago. But I thought their chemistry was outstanding last night in knocking off Penn State. Does that mean the PSU coach sucks or that their team chemistry is bad? I don't think so.

There are actually at least three exceptions: 2012, 2011, and 2008. Early exits can also mean that you've been playing over your head all season to get that spot in the S-curve. It's also been pointed out that the difference between the teams in the tier underneath the top 3-4 (Baylor, UConn, ND, possibly Stanford) is not that great. Outside observers looked at NU as a team that is very unpredictable: we caught them at a performance high point.

There's a saying in computer programming "There's more than one way to do it". Blair is a sets coach. He is very open about the fact that he calls plays and even scripts them for the first possessions of each half. Other coaches do it differently. But I'd venture that every one of our highly rated PGs who came here knew that about him when they were being recruited (Simmie, if you are lurking, please correct me if I'm wrong). I might do it differently if I was the coach, we should fire the AD.
quote:

We will have to disagree on this. I'm taking Coach at his word when he says Bone has been a real leader this season, and that Pratcher has been too.
quote:
I know what I am talking about , our seats are baseline court side about 25 feet from the bench.

Sorry, that doesn't impress me, even though my seats are further away.

I don't have any problem with discussion of potential problems/challenges with the team, or online second-guessing of the coaching. That's what internet forums do. But ...

  • Personally, I'm dislike speculations about leadership and desire. I believe the coaches know about these thigns, but I don't think fans can accurately measure them based on the available data.
  • The whole "wanting it more" business annoys me. From my pov, when the team has struggled it's not from lack of desire, it's from not knowing yet how to translate that into the appropriate action. I think our girls sometimes want it so much that they fail at the other cliches "let the game come to you", and "take what the other team gives you".
  • I think that "obvious" does not mean what you think it means.

YMMV

I feel certain Coach is evaluating the whole program....doubt he is ignoring problems that he has likely identified. Bet he would like to reverse the trend on NC to 3rd round out to second round out in the NCAA tournament.

With 3 Seniors gone, and Bone likely leaving...and only one recruit coming in. Coach will have 11 players to work with. He can stay with his current O if he chooses having Gilbert and Mitchell as his bigs and with 6'3" Jada Terry coming in. Or he could choose to go small with a quicker, faster more athletic line up.

He will also need to decide the type of D that will be played, and what needs to be done to get more fast break opportunities where we get easier transition type buckets.

It should be interesting. Standing pat usually does not change trends! The maturation of the current players will likely be significant....will it be enough with a one player addition to offset the productivity of the players lost...to me, that is the interesting question, and will we be able to make it out of the second round in the NCAA tournament next year....we won't be playing at Reed.

Probably the greatest mind in basketball coaching, and way ahead of his time...John Wooden...won with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and he won with Walt Hazard and a smaller, fast, pressing type lineup. Winning 7 NCAA championships in a row, and 10 in 12 years, showed how he could adapt, and do it with different players. He was national coach of the year 6 times.

There was almost 2 weeks after SEC tournament.
We played at home!

Frankly, we did not give Nebraska enough respect and preparation, and they played so well, we could not mount a comeback. All the talk was our likely deep run in the tournament....Huskers played harder, smarter and with a sense of urgency.
We started hanging our heads, and one of our players did not make it up and down the court all that much. Pratch and JJ played well....too bad we did not start to press full court earlier in the game...it was too little too late despite JJ trying to pull out the game herself.

It's why lots of coaches are anti conference playoffs .

yep...the coaches spin the conf tournament if they do not win the conf....my order of importance is....
1. NCAA Tournament
2. Season long conf championship
3. Conf tournament...yes, I know you get the auto bid, but if your team is good, it is just a matter of where you are seeded.

I used to think it just took a healthy, happy team that is playing well at the end of the season to do well in the Big Dance....I think we see it also takes a team that has the mental edge and a bit of a chip on their shoulder...our NC 2011 team had that!

Louisville reminded me so much of the 2011 Aggies last night - they believed they could beat Baylor. They just knew it.

While their upset of Baylor may well be a bigger deal than ours in 2011, the final arbiter of course is the next 3 games.

Louisville will be coming off the highest high possible other than winning the NC...to his credit, their Coach was already talking about the next game in their locker room after the bu game and letting his team know they were not at the top...yet.
Frankly, I fully expect the Vols to now win the OKC region and advance to the Final 4. Should be a fun game with Louisville.

I actually agree with many of your observations Bio. However, other than my comment about the set coaching ( entitled to my opinion and bet you are wrong about the true feelings of certain prior star point guards) my issue with coaching this year has to do with the assistants and defense in particular. Also don't believe I ever said or implied a problem with "wanting it more". I have been very clear about my support for Gary, just wanted thought provoking discussion. Don't appreciate the inference from other posters that raising issues makes one an offensive armchair QB. It is both easy and lazy to take the default wait till next year blind loyalty approach.

Anyone else notice we ran the exact same set play on our first possession vs Nebraska that we did during the national championship game vs ND? Difference being Syd Colson laid it in for the easy bucket, CWill missed the easy layup.
