Things to do:Indianapolis Museum of Art Nice museum and it’s FREE
If you have kids or not, the
Children’s Museum is fantastic.
Talk a walk around downtown to Monument Circle (the reason why Indy is called the Circle City)
You can walk around
White River State Park. From there, you can go to the
Indiana State Museum or the
Indianapolis ZooThere are plenty of things to do in the various
Cultural Districts. The two places I’ve been are Broad Ripple (a little north of downtown; plenty of shops, restaurants and bars) or Mass Ave (the east side of downtown; similar setup)
Restaurants:Of course, St. Elmo’s. Especially for the shrimp cocktail. Insider tip: Harry & Izzy’s is owned by the same people as St. Elmo’s; similar food at a slightly cheaper price.
Shapiro’s Deli (808 South Meridian Street) is good. I recommend the Reuben.
Mediterranean food – I recommend Santorini’s (1417 Prospect Street) in Fountain Square.
Mexican food – El Sol (2444 East Washington Street) I’m not sure why a Texan would get Mexican food in the Midwest but this place is good.
Scotty’s (the Aggie headquarters) has good food (1 Virginia Ave # 100)
Rock Bottom Brewery (10 West Washington Street)
Plenty of restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. Also, along Mass Ave and in Broad Ripple if you go there.
Bars:Local Brewery: Sun King (135 North College Avenue). They have a tasting room for you to hang out and sample their different beers. If you have a fridge in your hotel, you can pick up a growler filled with your choice of beer ($4 for the bottle; $5 to fill it on Friday). I’ll be there around 4pm on Friday filling up my growlers for the weekend.
Around downtown: Slippery Noodle (live music – blues), Kilroy’s, Cadillac Ranch (they have a mechanical bull), Howl at the Moon, Jillian’s (I know a bartender here – Nate, tall bald guy, tell him Todd recommended the place)
Mass Ave: Chatham Tap (great English pub), MacNiven’s (another English pub), the Rathskellar (German biergarten – live music; looks like the outside isn’t open yet), plenty of other bars along that stretch
Broad Ripple: More of a younger, college crowd and a good cab ride from downtown. Similar to a 6th street type area. Old Pro’s Table, Brothers (this place can get packed on a weekend), Broad Ripple Tavern, the Vogue (dancing)
Just a quick list of some suggestions. I tried to list local-ish restaurants (that happen to be my favorites) but we have a lot of the chain places as well. I’m sure I missed a few places so others can chime in. Enjoy and I'll probably see you around town.
