was mentioned in stocks thread but thought may deserve own discussion since could be significant $ for some

since I transferred the bulk of taxable non-index positions from Vanguard to Webull for 3% match a few years ago which has substantially grown, this would net a healthy 5-figure bonus that would royally f my taxes...
still I gotta pull the trigger right?

main things I preferred on Webull was ease of adjusting limit orders and options selling interface, but don't think I can turn down 3% upfront here..

I had also transferred all my Roth to RH when they had 3% which was unheard of (untaxed), and pretty sure 3% hasn't been offered anywhere since for a few yrs til this

Account transfer bonus | Robinhood

bonus paid upfront with a 5 year 'hold' restriction on transferred value to maintain bonus- summarized:
Quote:

The 5-year earn-out
  • It's a proportional clawback, not a full lockup. Only the part of a withdrawal that counts as bonus-eligible money is charged back.
  • Withdrawals are applied in this order: (1) money in the account that never earned a bonus (e.g. a pre-existing balance), (2) net investment gains, (3) bonus-eligible amounts.
  • Chargeback = your bonus rate the amount that lands in bucket 3, first-in-first-out by bonus credit date. It may be reduced based on time served toward the 5 years.
  • Chargebacks come out of available cash first, then possibly a linked bank account or margin.
What counts as a "withdrawal"
  • ACH, wires, debit card, RTP, ACATS out, and transfers to other Robinhood accounts (Banking, retirement).
  • Buying securities doesn't count. Selling positions inside the account doesn't count either, since only cash leaving does.
Before the offer period ends
  • Any withdrawal from any Robinhood account reduces the net transferred asset value the bonus is based on. Margin debit balances are subtracted too.
90-day maintenance + one-time grace period
  • After holding the transferred value plus the bonus for 90 consecutive days, you can use a one-time 60-day grace period.
  • Withdrawals in that window aren't charged back, but the at-risk part of the bonus is frozen until the money comes back.
  • It doesn't apply to ACATS out, so it can't be used to leave Robinhood.

If you're fine with RH platform and whatever restrictions they sometimes impose on trading, then yes it's a no-brainer deal.

This. Also, as I have been saying all along - WeBull is China.

And now they are being investigated by the US government as such as announced just yesterday. I would move your money ASAP if you have it there.

That is why you see this RH deal. Trying to capitalize on that.

If you're under SIPC coverages and don't care about the feature-sets, who cares. Money is money.

I'm in month 5 of getting Schwab to honor a financial commitment. Staying with the big boys doesn't mean you're above the fray.

Can anyone explain specifically the risks in not moving your money out?

1. China is asshoe.

2. Considering we are currently shutting down bank access or cutting off banks as part of the Iran war and now the admin has announced they are investigating WeBull, it would just seem prudent to get your money out ahead of any potential lock down, sanctions, etc. It's just not worth the risk with all of the options out there for your money that aren't backed by China.

3. I'll give you a personal example here...we have some money locked down in a quarantined account at my financial firm because the US government sanctioned some stuff due to Ukraine war. We randomly had money inside of some fund that got caught up in it and that money got siloed, sanctioned, and sits there for the time being. Can't touch it.

Their platform is absolutely horrendous.

But they offered a 1% bonus, no cap, for just 9 months hold last year.

Absolutely ridiculous free money.

Robinhood is nothing like what they were when it started. They've matured well and are a true player in the brokerage account game now. They have ~30MM funded accounts and were a big part of the Trump accounts.

Do they offer a bonus from say Fidelity or Schwab?

1% with 5 year hold.

Not terrible, but needs to be at 1.5-2% before it starts making sense to lock in that long.
