I'm taking a bath on VTI

I have a Roth IRA at Vanguard that I funnel a portion of my monthly pay to and it's been in the tank. I'm not a sophisticated investor so I thought buying an index would be suitable as post-tax investment strategy.

Any suggestions on alternatives I should consider or should I hang onto to VTI?

What kind of bath ?

VTI is up 12% ytd which is basically the s&p 500

I just opened the account earlier this year. Like I said, I'm not a sophisticated investor but it looks like I'm getting a negative return…? Below is also the cost basis.

That doesn't look like the whole picture, VTI itself doesn't equate to that level of change.

VOO is more balanced than VTI.

VTI is tech only. VOO captures other industries as well.

I'm not a financial advisor. I just know I have both VTI and VOO. VOO while it can obviously have losses as well…it has less downside risk than VTI.

I think you are thinking of VGT not VTI

Agree, without transaction history showing the ticker OP actually bought, no way to decode this. VTI is down 2% from it's all time high so unless OP has been buying and selling it over and over at bad times, I can't figure out how it's possible to be down so much on a stock that is 2% off ATH.

Not sure what is happening, but between 06/2026 and 07/2026 you deposited $576 and your investments only went up $270.45. Given that I don't see a >50% drop in VTI around that timeframe, I assume that there was either a withdrawal or some kind of fee processed during that time. The other timeframes look at least reasonable. I would check your activity around that point to see what might have happened.

VTI is literally a total market fund, how do you figure it is less balanced than VOO?
Additionally, those two funds overlap by about 80% ish, so personally I don't see why one would have significant holdings of both.

Looks like You're either paying a $10-$15 commission per transaction, there's a $250 annual fee hitting, or there's an unsettled cash balance from a recent deposit that is being counted in performance (flows) but not cash/balance.

Look at transaction history. Can probably figure it out.

Also, I thought AI answers were bad. Don't take advice from someone who doesn't know what a fund is. Takes 3 seconds to Google if unsure.

Vanguard should only have commission fees on broker assisted transactions. If OP is doing that then they should definitely change it to an online transaction.

Also, looking at those transaction logs I'd look at what all happened in June. It says you have a starting a balance of $503.56 and had $576 of deposits however July is only $774.01 starting balance. Something doesn't seem right there.

VTI and VOO are near identical. VGT is the tech-specific vanguard index.

I'll pile on with everyone else and say VTI ( total market fund) is a solid choice for your Roth, especially for a novice investor.

ETA: Vanguard also has some if the lowest fees of any of the brokerages, so you are good there too. Just do some digging and find out why your account isn't screenshot doesn't seem to match.

Make sure you elected to not get paper statements in the mail. If you get paper, they charge a fee. I had this setting change somehow without me doing anything at Vanguard once.

still keep major chunk of my taxable indexes in Vanguard but wild how much of a chore buying stocks there still is comparatively, if I've had Robinhood and/or Webull active in 2021/22 would prob have came out with a few K more shares of PLTR sub 20

You need to review your transaction history to see why you were charged ~$300 in June.

Huh? VGT ROI:

YTD: 33.88%
1 yr: 33.96%
2 yr: 66.49%
5 yr: 141.05%
10 yr: 750.06%

I've enjoyed holding VGT for the long term.
