Good morning,
A buddy has a lot of old coins and he needs to determine the value. I don't have a lot of details, but they date from the 1880s. Do you all have any recommendations for a trustworthy person who can provide that type of service? Thank you in advance for your help.

Good luck in your appraisal. Remember to get multiple opinions. I went to multiple places for estimates on a couple coins and the estimates ranged anywhere from $20 to over $400. I guess the low end estimates usually deal with thieves or the ignorant.

I would also recommend https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts

You can see things like mintage, rarity, and value. It will give you some knowledge as the appraiser is looking at them. I am note expecting your friend to understand grading but having some knowledge will help.

It will also help find the ones that may have a lot of value. If he finds 10 CC morgans, start with those.

There are different reasons people want an appraisal.

I taught myself some of this stuff after being left a collection and didn't know
what I had. I just went to a coin show nearby and looked at stuff and
asked questions. I determined I wasn't sitting on anything particularly valuable
and it wasn't going to factor into an estate calculation.

All that to say, depending on your friends interest and motivation that
might be a good first pass.

This isn't an exhaustive list:

here is one not on that list next week in Richardson.

I'm sure there are others.

I've gotten an appraisal for a friend by taking some stuff to US Coins in Houston

I can help you with this also

The coin industry is as one of my buddies said it is worse than horse trading

The problem is if there is alot of coins most dealers do not have time to go thru them so they are going to give the 35-60 range per morgan peace dollar

The pcgs yes is a good book but you have to remember they are taking auction prices and if a coin sells for 100. The seller gets 60 dollars most auctions are a 40/60 split

The other issue is grade which can be from AG3-MS 67. Very few are 67 and to be honest I am very good from AG3-MS 60 but I do not know how they go from a MS 60-MS67 because they all look the same to me

There are very few coins that have value at a G4-EF40.

So unless your coins are in pcgs or ngc holders you do not have much value(you still have value but probably not what your are expecting)

We inherited a small coin collection that I would like to offload. Mainly late 1890s to 1955 US coins. I have gone through the full lot and silver value alone is about $7k. What would be the best way to offload this as close to spot prices as possible?

Edit: I don't have the time/patience to sell individual coins. Would prefer to sell all together.

When silver was flying you could get close to spot
Now you will get 6-10 below just because of the volatility now ( I am not a expert in what coin shops will buy or spend per coin). Just what I have seen locally

Send me a text if you have morgans that is what i collect and I can look at the others for you also

If you would like me to

I can look at 30 coins a minute because I know what i am looking for

These are the type of coins and PCGS not pgcs
NGC. Not anacs ncg

Also even tho these coins are graded and high grades. They ate still not worth what you would think It is all about the mintage also per coin

Maddiedou helped me with an inheritance of coins. He is someone you can trust and is exceptionally helpful. He has a passion for coins and loves looking at them. I even got some fresh vegetables from his garden with the advice!

One would think with a little internet work, you can get accurate, real numbers on your own

You can get close but it will not be accurate

I am not trying to buy coins because they are mostly out of my range now but the internet is a helpful tool but not a good tool

It will give you fair market value vs "trusting" someone to throw out a number

I am not going to argue this with you

You are right and I agree get fair market value whatever the market is

Maddiedoo is a great Ag. I've helped him and he treats me as a long lost friend. I would trust him unconditionally.

Besides if you time it right he has a hell of a garden.

I agree with you but it is more complicated than that unfortunately and trust me I know I have been thru what you are describing but from buying not selling

And again this is not about me I am not a buyer I am just trying to explain a little bit that the prices that yall are going to receive are not internet prices and dang sure not ebay stupid prices

Last example. A 64 kennedy with 20 percent wear the silver value with today prices is 18 roughly you are going to be offered 14-17 and all silver has to do is fall 3-4 dollars and they have broke even or lost money ( i am not a professional coin expert)

I dont want to be in that game anymore
