I'm not a paranoid, or even a prepper. I have money in stocks, bonds, crypto and online savings accounts.
But looking at all my liquids funds, they're all in digital accounts.

If the worst were to happen such as a digital collapse, either an act of war or accidental, I'm not sure I would be able to get a cent of my funds. Is it a wise idea to store some aside like in a safe deposit box or something? Is there an agreed upon amount?

I realize that if the WORST were to happen, we'd all be bartering in food, water, ammo and toilet paper anyways...

Definitely wise but how much is the question. $1000 in $10s would probably cover 90% of situations. I could see maybe up to $10k.

Anything more than that and I'd rather have hard assets. A safe full of Glock 19s, and plenty of ammo to go with them, can always be traded for cash in any market.

And I don't like safety deposit boxes unless it's a 2nd or 3rd backup option. Last thing you want is to need your stuff and the bank is closed.

I recall reading in passing that even securing a safe deposit box these days is actually challenging. The ones that exist are spoken for.

Regardless, I was just thinking about this the other day myself - we have no cash on hand at the house and I'm planning to remedy that. We live on the coast in a small community so it's kind of stupid for us not to have any on hand.

Yeah, I keep $1000 cash at home. If the **** truly hits the fan, this won't cut it but it helps with more common emergencies.

If things are so bad that you can't get cash from your bank, then getting into the bank to access you safe deposit box won't be happening. If you store cash for such events, it's called buried in the back yard. Also, diamonds, gold and silver bars are more durable. But as said above, food, ammo, clothing, and fuel (oh good lord, fuel will be more valuable than food and ammo).

Good thoughts, thanks.
Just didn't want to get to the point of burying in the backyard yet, :-)

Yeah, I realize that. For us the immediate threat are hurricanes so we need cash just to get around town in the aftermath. I'm new to coastal life so I haven't fully prepped for that just yet.

This might be a dumb question but fuel (at least gasoline) doesn't seem to have a long shelf life. How does one stockpile that in a useful way?

Many gas stations now carry ethanol free gas. Put a little Stabil or Startron
in it and it will last a long time.

Or you can buy it at Lowe's, but pay about 10 prices for it.
