I'm looking for a new tax accountant for me personally and for the businesses I'm involved in. It's difficult to find anyone that is not fresh out of school or just isn't taking new customers. Impossible to find anyone in West Texas so now I just want to find a good professional (Aggie preferably). Any ideas or thoughts?

CPAs are hard to come by these days. It's a changing industry.

Depending on the complexity and your needs I have two suggestions.

1) Hire my fee only RIA to be your one stop shop. Investments and taxes under one roof. www.holisticplanning.com

2) If you have a more complex return and don't mind paying a premium for good tax advice I would look to TBK in Houston. The B in TBK is who I talk with a lot and while he's a Red Raider he's a good guy and very sharp.

Finally to add to my first comment about it being a changing industry: while I'm not an accountant this is my opinion. I think that not many kids graduate from college wanting to do 1000 returns and not see their family for months. So they go audit side of business. Add to that it's really hard for a cpa firm to hire someone when they are charging 500 bucks for a return. They have to add a ton of new business to cover the cost of the hire. And then the end customer isn't really happy because they can't get any proactive advice from the cpa because they are so busy doing 1000 returns.

That's why I'm investing heavily in this business and started my own cpa firm built into my financial advisory business.

I have heard others say pretty much the same thing, i.e. either fresh out of school (or only a few years experience) or don't want new customers. I quit taking new clients the last 10 or 12 or so years I practiced. I added a few clients when existing customers started another business, or their children did, but not anyone new. As I aged, the potential new clients were much younger, much harder to deal with, or wanted to delve into some complicated deals, and I was better off without the work, lol.

Hope someone has a good referral for you.

Great idea. I've dealt with the same small town cpa firm for 40 years. Long enough for 2 of the partners to die and now to have new partners. Over the years they have had some great young cpas work there after getting out of college. Most of them took jobs in the finance/ business offices of our local area schools eventually The schools pay cpas great salaries and they have Every weekend/ holiday off. Much less stress, better hours, good benefits, retirement, etc. Can't blame them.

I feel like a cpa would love to make six figures and have a deep relationship with 150 clients.

This is who we use. I don't know what kind of business you have but Mark can handle Ag and Oil.
