We're 2 years into a large construction litigation and finally through the bulk of discovery.

I'm looking at about 730k deduplicated documents and trying to figure out if there are AI tools out there at a stage that would be helpful in discovery review. I don't need them to list all the documents containing these keywords - I can do that easy enough.

An ideal application would be some level of word or phrase association that could put documents together based on concepts rather than keywords.

Any of y'all used or know if something is available along those lines? I have a peer with PWC that offers the service but I'd more interested going straight to the source of the tool.

Try Palantir. This type thing is in their wheelhouse. Go to a boot camp with this data and come back with real use case.

Perfect example for what they are trying to build.

You might check with Transperfect http://www.transperfect.com

Theu were initially focused on language translations, but I believe support large file searches for discovery.

We just got pitched on Thompson Reuter's "CoCounsel" this morning. Their database analysis tool is currently rated to handle 250GB as I understand it. May be worth looking into.

since this was directed to a particular set of skills

on a related issue- anyone familiar if for large discovery there is still need for "contract attorneys" to basically just assist the litigators?

this was something I did 26 years ago waiting on a security clearance, it was gettting back to basically stick page numbers on documents

do these part time legal jobs still exist?

Yes.

In particular, the eDiscovery tool we use currently offers technology assisted review as well as contracted attorney review.

Cloudnine Review is the service, for what it's worth.

Lol. Not my business, but yes their AI apparently did not predict the future very well when it comes to their name.

Just saw this thread and curious about an ediscovery question. A buddy of mine had a company that has an ediscovery platform for structured data - so instead of documents and emails, think transactional records from business systems. Rather than export millions of records to a spreadsheet or spin up a relational database, they have a cloud platform for managing and reviewing records.

For anyone on here in the biz, I'm curious if you run into this need ever? I was helping them a few years ago and the whole area was new to me, so I don't know jack about it. Thanks.

My second job out of school was working as a clerk for one of the largest international law firms. I entered discovery into an access database and compiled discovery notebooks for attorneys. It was a big deal when we were going paperless and converting everything to pdf with text recognition. I saw the junior associates spending ridiculous hours doing doc review and decided I didn't want to go to law school. 18 years later and my salary has finally caught up to what those first year associates make nowadays.

My firm uses Disco for large document productions. I don't personally know how to use it. I make associates do all of that **** for me, but they say it's pretty good.

We demo'd Disco on Tuesday. It is much more promising than our current tool. About 2x the price but I think the ease of use and speed are worth the cost.

I'm a solo practitioner and would love a cost effective tool to summarize and index discovery production. Usually just talking production in the 1000s. Most of the ones discussed here seem geared towards much bigger firms/doc dumps.

thanks Sims! I will check it out

seems like a great way to enter early retirement but to have some income streams in a gig economy

if I can find a contract job for attorneys to assist with discovery or "easy- but labor intensive projects"

Out of curiosity, what does a retired attorney do for health insurance…Medicare? Self insure? Med share? Barter?

I'd like to retire by 55 if practical. /hijack

Buy a farm, get your AGI down to 20k and get the best ACA plan for essentially free.

Medicare.

I spent about the last 12 years of my career as District Attorney so the State of Texas provided my health care until I turned 65. The least the state could do in exchange for a fairly meager salary. But I sure had a lot of fun.

Just following up on this...We are about 3 weeks into using Disco eDiscovery and couldn't be happier to have switched from the previous vendor.

Ease of use, tools available, speed are all top notch compared to our recent experience.
